Head Bolts 05 RMK 900

I've seen the thread that says not to use the lock tight 242 on the head bolts as the factory manual tells you to but I haven't see much or anything about sealing the head bolts. I know they were sealed because, 1. I saw the light green sealent on the head of the bolts as there were taken out for the first time since leaving the factory and 2. Mountainhorse said they were sealed under the head of the bolt. Problem is I can't remember what he told me to use to seal them and thought it would be nice to have a post for future use. :face-icon-small-hap

When you see this Eric, can you post your recommended sealant so there will be a searchable post for this?

Also, one post recommended actually using antiseize on the head bolt threads after chasing them...what do you think?

Thanks,

John

Make sure you have the washers the bulletin calls for and I used the 242 with out a problem!?

I never use loctite in alumium. The cast material along with all the heat cycles that the bolt are suject to tend to create corosion. How many times have you taken a head bolt out and held your breath because it came hard all the way, and then pulled some threads. On the first disassembly I replace the bolts with studs and nuts. When I use bolts over I will use neversieze, this helps to control corrosion and lubricates the pull-n-twist motion of the bolt in the cast cyl. This is why the studs are superior to the bolt beacuse they just create a "pull" load on the alum threads. Never had any thing come loose! I maintain ONLY neversieze in any aluminium.

I ended up chasing the threads (inner and outer), using antiseize (aluminum type NOT copper type) and sealing them with Threebond 1194 non-hardening. That or somthing similar is what appeared to be on them from the factory.
