HD TV's

I'm replacing my old 50" rear projection with a new 55"-65" LCD or Plasma. What would you buy??

I'm thinking Samsung, but I found a nice 55" Visio 3D that I'm thinking about.

Sugestions???

The only advice I can offer is buy from a TV & appliance store that can meet your service needs should you have any.

Sure buying from Walmart may save you a few bucks up front, but they are worthless when you need service.

I'm looking at the Samsung D6000 series. I don't think I want or need 3D, so that's why I'm not looking at the D6400's.

I'm also torn between the 46 or 55 size. I currently have a smaller living room, but I don't want to short myself for later on (my wife has a 42" Samsung with her, so if I buy one, I should probably upsize it a bit more than 4"...that's what she said.)

I read a review on Amazon about the edge-lighting being distracting when you go lights-out in the viewing room. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN55D...0NNG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312509329&sr=8-1

Lastly, if price isn't an option, go buy a Sony. You'll pay for it, but it won't be beat (except maybe by the Elite series that are coming back).

I've also been watching gizmodo.com for their deal of the day...they had the 55" Samsung D6400 on there with a 3D Blu-Ray player and glasses for $1500 last week. Should have jumped on it. It was through Tigerdirect.com

It kind of depends on what your wanting your tv for. When I bought mine last year, I really wanted the LCD. The problem was I wanted it for sports, & after watching the LCD, and the Plasma side by side, I ended up buying the Panasonic 65" V series. To me, it had the best picture for what I wanted it to do. There not quite as bright as the LCD, but mine was going in the basement anyways, so that wasn't a concern. They have a quicker refresh rate, so you don't see the blur that you see on the LCD.

I'm not really into the 3D thing, so I didn't go with one of those. I can't stand to have glasses on while I'm watching a movie. Plus there pretty spendy when your trying to buy 4 or 5 pair for your family.

The nicest picture out there is the LED tv's, but when I was shopping, the biggest one they had was a 55". I wanted something a little bigger, so I went with the Plasma. I'm pretty sure you can get a bigger one now. I know they make a 70" LCD. Anything from Panasonic, Sony, or Samsung are gonna be your best bet for picture quality IMO!

japanese built not korean go with Sharp, Samsung, Panasonic or Sony

STay away from Vizio, etc. It will pay off in the long run, I used to sell HDTV's at Vann's. I have a 65" Hitachi rear Pro that weighs 365 lbs , paid $5500 for it years ago regular $8,000 it is huge but the picture is great and I would be lucky if someone gave me $400 for it, make sure you buy premium cabling it makes a huge difference in picture Quality, they usually have a lifetime guarantee

I will put my Samsung against any Sony any day.

How much do you want to spend? How big do you want? 3D? (I personally think it is a lame fad that will die, it is hard on your eyes, bad for children and you cannot use it for long periods of time, not to mention the additional cost).

Plasma gives you better pure black/contrast.

Plasma is hot, it will heat up a room on it's own. If you live at elevation they can make noise, even the ones rated for elevation. They are highly susceptible to burn-in.

LCD I think is a better TV, longer life, impossible to burn in.

Give me your budget and size requirements and I'll point you in the right direction. I bought my last TV on Amazon. Saved near $200 in taxes, free shipping, un-beatable price.

I agree with most of that, except the the burn in part. They've pretty much taken care of that problem in the last few years. They even put in a wipe that you can run if for some reason it does burn in, and it will be gone the next day. I've got a 65" plasma, and run it for at least 10 hours a day during football season, and never had a problem with it heating up a room. It does get hotter than a LCD, but never enough to notice it. The elevation noise was taken care of also up to 12,000'.

If I were buying a LCD, there's no question I'd go with Samsung though. Awesome picture. If your getting the plasma, go with Panasonic. The life on a Plasma now is rated for 60,000 hours. That's 8 hours a day for 20 years. I'm sure I won't have this tv 20 years from now. LCD is rated for 100,000 hours.

Agreed on the Panasonic Plasma, Pioneer Elite makes a great Plasma as well.

About the wipe feature, it actually burns the entire screen evenly. You want to use this feature sparingly.

Plasma will burn that is the nature of it. It is not an issue if you watch tv. If you leave something on the screen, say a DVD startup, or some sort of text, forget about it and go to sleep. It will be burned in. Video games are harder on Plasmas as well. LCD is impossible to burn in. You can leave the same screen up for 10 years and it will be fine. Plasma is better than it used to be for burn in and noise.

I'm a LCD fan or LED if it was my next purchase. Plasma, um not with what I have seen, it's just not what I like.

As for makers. In comparisons with other family members whom have Samsung and we do have a smaller Samsung when I purchased our current LCD HD TV about 1.5 years ago we went with SONY. Reason being the sound. The SONY will allow you to hear better off the integrated speakers more so then Samsung will. Samsung seems poor in speaker performance almost making you run a separate sound system. I didn't want to do that, I'm not into it that much. The SONY just did a better job between them.

Now having it for the past 1.5 years, I'm very satisfied with it and would buy or recommend the SONY BRAVIA series to anyone.

I have a Samsung Plasma. I was told that it was the best for watching sports becuse of a higher refresh rate. Don't know if it's true but it's 2 years old and looks great. Make sure you get HD with it or your wasting your time. One thing that made a huge difference on my TV was once I had about 30 hours on it, I found a website that had user settings that really perked up the color and clarity.

I have a 42" Phillips LCD I picked up 4 years ago. We are starting to get the itch for a little bigger screen, but its worked great since we have owned it.

Samsung. LCD. Dont bother with the plasma.

Get a 120 or higher refresh rate. people will tell you it doesn't make a difference, but it does in HD and if you do any gaming.

I have a Sony Bravia. It seems to do quite well and have had it going on 3 years. Picture is still awesome, hasn't faltered one bit.

I don't know much but it's 46 or 47 and is plenty big for my living room. Bigger is not always better. Unless you are putting it in a designated TV room.

I hope to get a 42" installed on the wall in my billiard room.

& your reasoning for that? I've got a 46" Samsung LCD, and a 65" Plasma. For sports, I'd take the plasma any day over the LCD. Both tv's are in a fairly dark room when the blinds are closed, so the reflection doesn't bother either one. I'm just curious why you wouldn't bother with the tv that has a better blacks, and a higher refresh rate.

Not all Plasma's have a higher refresh rate. For the most part you only need 120 mhz refresh rate.

About integrated sound... I could really care less how good the TV speakers are. I have a full sound system and most people I know that spend the money on a nice TV will have a sound system as well. Soundbar at least.

120mhz is ok, as long as the tv is under about 50". After that you need to have at least 240 IMO. Most plasma's are at least 600 mhz, and you can't even see the grainyness, even with the bigger tv's. After you dial them in, either tv is gonna be fine. I just like my plasma better, because I actually took the time to research it, and get the colors dialed in the way there supposed to be. Why they can't come like that from the factory, is beyond me.

All TV's look tons better once they get dialed in. The dial in takes time and that means money. It is something a lot of companies sell (setup) or you can do some research and find out what works for your TV.

The refresh speed is different on a PLasma than an LCD. LCD doesn't need the speed a Plasma does. Again they each have their own advantages but if you buy quality it really won't matter.

I got the panasonic plasma 3d and I think it's a 50".
I'm a plasma guy, as I cannot stand the way a lcd picture jumps around. Plasma has evolved quite a bit even over the last year, their picture life has quadrupled since the first ones came out, and I think they advertise twice the life of an lcd. I've watched 3d 1 time on it, so basically it's cool to say you have a 3d tv, but I don't use it.

I do have an led/lcd in the bedroom, but that tv is only on before we go to sleep.

LCD's are rated for about 100,000 hours, and Plasma's are only rated for 60,000 hours. At 60,000 hours, that's 8 hours a day for 20 years. I'm pretty sure I'll never have a tv for that long. I only use mine for about 1 hour a day anyways, except Sunday's. Then it's on for 12 hours for football. :)
