my parents got a new lcd hdtv this fall. was thinking about getting them an hddvd or bluray player. what is everyone's thoughts? which is a better choice. i have seen one combo player but im thinking it was about a grand. maybe i should wait until they come down in price a bit?

I'd hold out for a year or so, see where the market goes. If you've got satellite/cable, there's high-def programming and some on-demand media there....

Unfortunately the manufacturers are letting consumers decide which format they want... Which is a bad idea. Same thing happened with AM-stereo years ago.

Sony has a good product, but they're stingy with their licensing. My gut feeling is that Blu-ray will go the way Betamax and MiniDiscs went. Good technology but they (Sony) wouldn't let any other manufacturers in on their success and the technology ultimately died.

I have blu-ray and would recomend it. Blu-Ray is better than HD-DVD because the disks have more storage space, so the audio is better on blu-ray. Plus I heard that HD DVD is going away for good soon after Christmas(only a rumor)

My bet is on HD as well. As has been said, time will tell. It's like the beta vs. VHS. PS supports Blu-Ray, and XBox 360 supports HD. I got a killer deal on Black Friday on a HD player (with 7 free HD movies), and it's great that it upscales regular movies. Still should be some deals out there with both competing for holiday sales.

I don't know that audio makes any noticeable difference. I suppose if you don't have good sound to start with, but most new HDTV's are pretty good.....and if you have a surround system, well it just flat rocks. My brother in law has both (which I viewed before I bought).....and so that helped me in my decision. :)

What is Blue Ray, I hear it all the time but not up on it.

1080P full HD video definition. Ultra clear picture with 7.1 sound. Just go down to any best buy/circuit city and they will have a tv on display that shows the difference between HD/blu ray and regular DVD. After watching movies in HD/Blu ray you will NEVER go back to regular DVDs again. The difference is unreal.

I have an xbox 360 so i got the HD-DVD attachment for it. I love it! Watching transformers in HD is amazing. I tried to watch it regular and its garbage. The only problem is that most of the movies i currently want to see are coming out blu ray. Disney movies are all blu ray. However i did get the bourne identity trilogy in HD (awesome!)

I will be getting a PS3 someday and start the collection of blu ray discs.

For those that are new to the HD stuff you will note that the HD DVDs are super expensive to buy. I would recommend buying them used at FYE or and entertainment place. They are usually $15-20 which is a lot cheaper than $40 or $50 brand new.

VHS or BETA?

The outcome of who was "on top" of this was determined by the poorno industry. See what format they are using and your answer will be clear. Your TV may not be though:beer;

Well, I just bought a 50" Samsung Plasma and a Samsung Blu-ray player ($299). IMHO Blu-ray is the way to go. It upconverts standard DVD's to near HD-dvd quality. Plus you can play dvd's, HD-DVD, AND Blue Ray discs. The image and sound on the Blu-ray is incredible. Even our standard dvd's look nicer on the plasma being played on the Blu-ray player. Sony makes one as well, but it is $399. Didn't think it was worth the extra $100 bucks.

Hope this helps, but I would definitely go Blu-ray. Even if it goes away, you can still what standard DVDs and HDDVD's.

Ive read that blu-ray has more studios signed on then HD DVD, thats why you are starting to see great deals on HD players with free movies included - they are trying to gain market share. One story I read concerning the battle said that it would be decided by of all things the p0rn industry - whichever format they choose will win the battle. I cant confirm it but it is interesting that it is a factor.
My 2¢

blu ray players cannot play HD-DVDs. if they could the answer would be blu ray because you would not need the HD-DVD player.
If your buying blu-ray you might as well buy the PlayStation 3. Its the same price as the regular blu ray player and allows you to play video games as well as surf the internet, etc... Both come with rebates for 5-7 free blu ray discs.

I got 5 free movies with my HD DVD player. I got the planet earth series... man that is some kool stuff!:D

animule hit the head on the nail.we really don't know what the standard will be. both have the same storage space, hd dvds media is cheaper to make. imo hddvd will over take it. blu ray has been around for the last 5 years and never went anywhere because of technology rights.plus hddvd is catchier and easy for the public to decifer the difference.

like every other new technology, i'm gonna sit back and see who wins... inevitably which ever i'd choose will probably be the loser and i'll be stuck with thousands of bucks worth of crap... one will emerge and one will fade away... in the meantime i'll wait for the war to end...

My apologies Phatty, I thought I could when I read the box and was mistaken. But, the Blu-ray does throw down a nice image! Just wish I could watch some of the HD films now! DOH! I also get 5 free movies with my Blu-ray and I think one with the Monster cable I bought. Which ever way the industry goes, High Def is plan AWESOME!
