Have some Phazer questions....

I just purchased 2 phazers. I have siphoned the old gas out of one of them and put fresh in. I have pulled the plugs and checked, cleaned and gaped them. I can get it to fire off and run for approx. 20 seconds then it sputters a little and dies. I am assuming I will probably need to pull the carbs and clean them. I saw on this post http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=307551, someone mentioned the big nut on the bottom of the carb and that possibly being an easy clean/fix with out having to take the carbs off. Now.....I'm sorry for some basic questions, but this is kinda new to me.....can I just take off the clutch that is in the way so I can easily get to those nuts? I looks like I would have to remove the clutch anyways to get the air box off to clean the carbs. Is it just as easy as that....remove the bolt and the clutch will come off? If not...how do I remove it?

Also, as I dont know what year these might be.....anyone have any ideas?

First of all, you should really take the carbs off and clean them. You are right, taking the clutch off is gonna help you to access the carbs but you dont need to take the air box off. It s tight but work. Just take the screw off the clutch and it will come off. Finally, I would bet that your phazer are 1988 or you just hae to look on the side of the tunnel to see the date.

I bugged my local dealer today....gave me some good advice. I have removed the carbs from the one sled by just loosening the airbox. Worked fairly well. Hardest part was the stupid fuel lines on the bottom. Needed to replace the crappy lines anyways....the carbs were very very dirty. Cleaned them up nicely and will swap in some new fuel lines and a new inline filter later this week. I dont think the carbs have ever been gotten in to before....only 800 miles on this sled. The other has 900 miles. Then to start on the second sled.....

So the code on the side starts with 86F. Does that mean they are 86's? They are only about 3 numbers apart on the vin.

If you hit ebay you might also find a old Aaen pipe for that sled. I cant remember the exact hp numbers but It made a big difference on mine! Nice sleds.

OK......Got one running great. The other.....not. I have pulled the carbs and thoroughly cleaned them out several times. It acts like the wide open shutoff thing is not working. I have bypassed that now as well and it is still doing the same thing. I can get it to start. Its will run for 15ish seconds then sputter off.

Any suggestions?

Ok. I got it running....but it will not go more than 2000 rpms. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm on the mountain at the cabin and it would be nice to get this thing going.

Anyone......im at a loss. Starts 2nd pull. Idles. Give it throttle and it bogs it down. Carbs are clean. Doesn't seem to be firing on one of the cylinders. It's getting great spark and has new plugs. I've had the carbs off and throughly cleaned them about 6 times. Any suggestions????

phazer

After it dies pull the plug wires off and try to feel the plugs, if one of them is fouled it will be cooler than the other one.. Replace the colder one or both of them.

Ok.....so got it figured out. I believe it was bad connections to the CDI. That is all I can attribute it to. One sled would run great for about 30 mins then start doing the same thing that the other would do all the time. Both were exhibiting symptoms of the TORS. For ****s and giggles I took the CDI out of the one that ran good and put it into the other one. It ran great! So I put the CDI from the one that wouldn't run into the one that would and it ran great.....so all I can come up with is the sleds had sat so long that the bullet connectors that connect the CDI were not clean and 100%. Thanks for all the advice from everyone! Got to take the kiddos out for a 4 1/2 hour ride Monday and they loved every min of it!!!!!!!

Happy new Year!!!
