Have engine RX-1 trouble, help..

I pulled a bender turbo (and NOS) off our sled because it was hard to tune for elevation changes and oil consumption (quart per ride). It would lay down an oil smudge in the snow on hard acceleration. No sign of oil at idle or low speeds. I assumed the turbo was leaking it through its seals. Well, it still lays down a smudge without the turbo. It starts/idles fine, and runs at about 90% the power of our other stock one tons. Doesn't quite spool up like the others. The compression is better than our other sleds. I tried a leakdown test but can't find any obvious leaks. I've checked and re-shimmed a few valves. I looked at the piston tops/cylinders and they looked fine but looked like they were burning oil. The intakes are dark stained which I originally thought was from turbo oil but now figure it was caused by blow-by cycling oil from the breather back into the carbs. I now realize I probably should have gone and replaced rings while I had it partially apart. Could valves be a the problem? They looked tight (held solvent) when I had the head off. I'd appreciate any advice on what to do next? This sled's driving me crazy.

What year is it ? The 03 had ring problems and some people have used Seafoam in them to clean out the rings.

Sled has 2500 miles on it. My other 03 Tons have between 6 and 10K miles on them, always use 1/3 qt oilevery ride, they have lower compression than this sled, but run super strong. I've tried the seafom green and no improvement. May try the seafoam again.

What oil has that sled been runinng? A local here tried running some synthetic in an 03 and It went thru oil fast and continued to consume oil even after switching back to the standard Yamalube.

The 03's all go through oil. Its a valvue problem that Yami caught and fixed, by the 04's and for sure by the time the Apex came out. Its worse under boost, but the motors are still strong. Common issue.

A leak is not common though.

You should also start to see a coolant leak. If so its a small rubber elbow under and in front of the primary clutch. Its a pain to get to and change, and will only leak while the sled is at operating temp. The rubber will tighten up and not leak once cooled down, also a common problem witht he RX-1.

When you had it apart did you check the valve guide clearance? If it is excessive coupled with worn out seals it will suck oil down the guides. How do the plugs look? IF the valves are seating well, you wont see any of this on a leak down, or the solvent test.

Good luck, also check the oil vent is not plugged up. Actually that is where I would start. If it is plugged or restricted and building up extra crank case pressure, the oil and pressure will find a way out somewhere somehow.

:pray2:

Hopefully it is something easy.

I've never run synthetic, but previous owner may have.

We have also had front cooling elbo issue on 2 out of 12 sleds so far, one last week on Baker.

I am thinking valve guide clearance may be the issue. I didn't check it while apart, but should have. We have so many miles on our other sleds and no worn out motors I couldn't imagine an issue like this. Could it have been caused by the turbo/nos. Crankcase vent is clear. Thanks for all the suggestions.
