Has anyone painted their panels with spray paint?

I'm looking at doing a wrap on my 16 rmk and it has red panels which limits the wraps I can put on. I don't feel like spending $500 for new panels and or brining them to a body shop for $250 so I was curious if anyone used canned spray paint and how it looks and holds up? I was going to spray paint them black or grey.

Thanks

Do you mean put a wrap over the red and than another wrap on top of that?

The area that shows is the area in between the wrap which throws it all off?

Plastic is difficult to paint and have it stick. If you do paint it, make sure you treat it to remove static electricity. This is what causes the peeling. Even after treating it, you have about a 50% chance it won't flake off.

Thats the problem with all these wraps....There DIY kits that anyone can install and have a huge margin of error. A wrap by someone that knows what they are doing can be 100% coverage and not show any of the base color. Eric

Go on Mountain Sledder Swapmeet on Facebook and ask someone to trade. People do it quite often. Then it'll only cost you shipping one way.

Nooooo Paint!!!

Don't do it!!!!!! I paint for a living. I'm Telling you, Paint needs a porous surface to bond. Unless your willing to sand your plastic's then spray paint a minimal of 3 coats with light sanding between each coat, I wouldn't do it! Even if you were to sand I know it would scratch right off the first branch or even a metal button that touches it.... Go to your local custom car wrap company or Sign maker and ask them to purchase some Vynal Wrap cut what you need Heat and Stick!! My 1cent!

I'm pretty sure the panels are already painted TPO plastic... Scuff with scotchbrite ...and paint with regular paint... should be good.

HUH???

You are just painting over paint with clearcoat that was put on top of a Paintable plastic panel that is made from the same plastic with paint as the panels on the ProRide-ProRMK's... and even the hoods on the Dragons... No biggie... scuff and spray.

TPO is a WHOLE DIFFERENT animal compared to HDPE...

HDPE is a real pain to try to paint....

Most Car bumpers are made from TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin)...Those are painted too.

Best not to sand through the existing paint when you are prepping... and use a good Wax/grease remover before sanding and before painting.

Sprayed the side panels on 3 different ProRmk's... zero issues with durability and appearance.

If I am wrong about the side-panels on the AXYS sleds, and they are in fact NOT painted TPO... I very open to learn !

I'm not saying they "can't" be painted...but for somebody that is concerned about a few very small visible lines around a wrap, I certainly would not suggest using a rattle can to cover it up.

Doesn't matter how much you prep the material before you paint it, aerosol paints are just inherently less durable due to the absence of a catalyst to cure and harden with a chemical reaction. One drop of gas or other solvent based fluid and it'll soften, peel, and look worse than when you started. At that point you're left with a complete mess.

I agree with you about the rattle can and gas spills etc..

You make an EXCELLENT point WyoPro

There is the alternative: Use a Catalyzed "rattle Can" like those sold by Eastwood etc.
