Harts Pass

Dam. What are the areas we should stay away from? All I have been hearing is the avy danger.
Stay away from the whole place, the riding is horrible up there! :D
I really wish I was going that way this weekend. There are a few other guys on here from the Methow... I think cpatts1000 or something along those lines is one of them.
And don't ever go riding with skidoo cowboy unless you want to spend all day helping him get unstuck :D

Haha I got a couple of buddies are the same way. Where does everyone park at?? I was planning on meeting some locals there and me and my group could tag along. So there are no safe places at all to ride there right now??

Your just mad because your pos isn't running and when it is you can never make it up the hills far enough to help me get unstuck

Usually you can park at Yellow Jacket snow park but I doubt there's enough snow down low yet, maybe. If not just head up the road until it gets deep enough. Sled decks are best for that of course.

Like others said, it's gnarly avey territory and surrounded by wilderness so watch the boundaries, they do enforce the wilderness and it's a fairly small riding area actually. If you go past the mines and head up you will run in to a large yurt that the North Cascades Helli Skiing company owns. I wish I could make it.

Have fun and most of all, be safe.

Wow, 53 inches up top! Harts snotel http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/nwcc/sntl-data0000.jsp?site=515&days=7&state=WA

Only 5 inches at the bottom http://www.nwac.us/weatherdata/mazama/now/

Unless I'm mistaken (and I'm sure you'll be happy to correct me) if you make it to the yurt, you're in the wilderness area.

I think your on the edge but still ok and I'm sure they can't put one of those in the wilderness, especially with that big foundation they put in.

I think you can go to the top above the yurt but not past it but it's been a while. I do remember lots of signs on the boundry.

There is a local group out of Okanogan/Omak area headed up for Sunday I believe. They know the area pretty well. I bet there is good riding to be had down in the trees. Im just not sure if I want to go play with the Avy's yet...

I heard Hiway 20 has a slid a couple times already?? Can anybody confirm this??

Wilderness area

Pretty sure the yurt is about 150yds into the wilderness area, used for skiers is how they get away with it.

Not too much avy danger if you go to the right when you get to the road split at the top...nice bowls and cornices. If you go left just play around around in the first area up to the right of the second area which is down and to the left. Do not continue out to brown bear and the edge of the mountain unless you are prepared and know exactly where you are going. It gets pretty tricky out there pretty fast. The big hill at brown bear is where we lost one of our own early riding last year so that hill has a history of coming down.

Hiway 20 has already slid twice and one of them is in an area that most have never seen come down. I know that the big chute directly below liberty bell has come down. In an average winter there are usually 3 slides between the annex and the summit..this would be the top one of those 3. To my knowledge the other 2 have not come down yet so watch out. The 2 slides that build up in the stretch below the hairpin are kind of "build up" slides that feed from 2 of the chutes above the hairpin so they probably wont come down until the snow gets above the roadsigns.

Don't get me wrong guys, not trying to be negative...BUT I went up hiway 20 when I had only been riding about 2 years and it scared the sh!t out of me. Just be prepared. Once you get through the chutes and up to the summit, the riding is phenomenal. Nice meadows (watch for the creek in the meadow to the right at the summit  ), nice boondocking. All in all a great area with pristine snow above the 6k mark. It just makes me nervous when early season riders are dying for snow and maybe head into areas that they aren't ready for. Hart's and Washington pass are both technical ride in's with avy danger so just be ready. We lost too many of our brethren last year.

There is a lot of talk on here about the avy danger being high, have any of you actually checked the avy forcast (http://www.nwac.us/) instead of taking other peoples word for it. Not trying to be an a$$, just want everyone to be safe. As of yesterday dead horse has no slides, and a lot of snow for not having come down yet, which means any day now. The yurt is not in the wilderness area, but everything around it to the north is, please if you do not know the area, stay out of there, the heli skier's have been trying to close this area to snowmobilers every year and when they see tracks in the wilderness area they take pics and turn them in to help build their case. Also the avy danger getting to the yurt is WORST in the entire harts area. I have been on too many rescues and have lost too many friends to the excitement of the first snow at harts, so please be safe. Any questions about the avy danger pm me, also if you are up there and see any new avy activity, pm me so that we can put that in our daily report to nwac, any info helps. Now that I am off my box, the snow is pretty good with not much base so be careful of rocks in brown bear, and stumps in the burn.

Went to hart's yesterday. While we were up there some rocks and a tree came down at dead horse. It didn't block the road but be careful. Every hill had rollers coming down. We just played on the flat because it didn't look good. The snow has really started to settle with wet snow on top of the powder. You barely sink in more than 6 inches unless really on the throttle.
