Hard steering effort on 09 M8

I have a 09 M8 162 sno pro and the steering effort on it is very hard compared to other sleds that I ride with. I have tried the stock skis, powder pros, and simmons. The simmons were damn near impossible to turn and the powder pros were not much easier, the stock skis were the easiest to turn but pushed through everything. I have played with my suspension and still can't find a happy medium. Do I just have to deal with it or is there anything that I can do to solve this? Other than this I absolutly love the sled, I am a lone kitty riding in a pack of dragons....PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

My 09 M1000 has the same problem, hard to steer. I have the stock ski's on the sled to. I also have talked with a few other guys that have 09 M8 and 1000's and they said they were hard to steer also. We might just have to live with the problem unless some one has a solution??

I have an '09 M1000 and had the same problem, it wanted to track and was really hard to steer. I fixed it by adjusting the skis so that they have a slight toe-out of an 1/8" or so. Now the steering effort is much less and handles great.

08 m1000 is the same way. as the skid is the same. Even with less weight of the 09 or the 40lbs i've pulled off mine it's still tough to steer. A stiffer front skid spring helps though. i think the stock one is WAY to soft. I'm running a Holz spring combo instead and it's much improved. Still tougher to steer than i like, but i also haven't tried messing with it all yet - might try cranking the spring up and keep the limiters all the way loose.

When I first rode mine I thought the steering effort was way harder then my 06 M7 with the exact same skis(Powder Pros)

I checked ski alignment and it was toed in almost 1/4"

Adjusted for about 3/16" toe out and steers much better. Feels very similar to the M7 now.

There is noticeably less transfer on my 09 compared to the KMOD skid in my M7 but it handles the same in the powder and works better when climbing

New track really rocks!

Adjusting Toe

I have an 09 M8 162 that is hard steering, I would like to know the proper way to adjust TOE. I do not know where to measure to determine whether my ski's are toed in or out. Just looking down at the skis it looks like they are toe'd in. Any info would be great. BTW I hate these OEM skis they need to go to recycle what is everyone running on these sleds. Thanks

I have an 09 M8 and the steering effort is harder than my 07 m8. I parked the two next two each other to try to figure it out. The difference is in the attachment of the tie rod to the ski spindle. Remember in the advertising for 2009 Arctic Cat said they increased the ski turn angle by 10 degrees. Well they accomplished this by shortening the the arm where the tie rod attaches. I can't remember the exact measurements but something like 3 1/4" on the 07 down to 2 3/4" on the 09. Increases the ski turn angle for the same handle bar movement but also increases the effort to do this. I did not look to see if you could substitute the two parts. I am going to leave mine as it is, I like the tighter turning radius when I need it and can live with the higher steering effort. Riding the 07 feels like power steering compared to the 09 though.

I ues a long straight piece of wood or metal which I place along the entire length of the left side of my track. The straight edge needs to be long enough to extend out to near the front of your skis. Next, make sure your handle bars are straight (I measure from two fixed points on either side of my handlebars to a point on the back of my sled. I move the bars until I have the same measurement. Now your handlebars and track are on the same plane. I now adjust (by either turning in or out, tie rod ends) until my left ski is in line with my straight edge. Measure from two matching points as far forward and back on your ski as you can. Once the left ski is inline with your track, measure the distance across you skis from two matching points, front and back. Now adjust, using tie rods from the rightside first, until you have achieved your desired toe out 1/8" to 1/4" covers 90% of all sleds out there.

Make sure you do not take too much adjustment at one point on a tie rod so as to not leave enough threads in the shaft.
