Hard pull start!!!

Just bought a o6 switchback 900....works great with all the characteristics of this particular sled...the updates have apparently been done and it is all stock yet.
No electric start....I am a capable guy to start any machine but HOLY SMOKES!!! is this thing hard to pull over when it is cold out.
warmed up ,it starts for a girl one pull!
Is this normal for this motor....or is there something i can look for to make cold start easier.....I am serious very very HARD:face-icon-small-dis cold start?

Yes, they can be very hard to start when cold.

To keep from hurting the sled (or me for that matter) I will generally pull it over 5-6 times very slowly (one "chug" at a time) just to get things freed up before giving it an honest pull.... then it's 2-3 pulls and shes running.:cheer2:
 
when is it really really cold it is almost impossible to pull them over. About the only thing you can do to make it easier is park your sled in a heated garage at night, or install an electric start.

I have fresh plugs in....trying RN57YCC and BPR9ES any difference ? NO but does she perform when its running and sounds so nice even for stock system.
Im glad i am not the only one to experience the tuff pull...guess i keep eating my wheeties!!!! lol
At least I know if it gets stolen on a cold nite, it was a big sonofagun who took it!!!lol.

I've been running the champions since the sled was new and have never had a problem with them ever.

Thats the best way to do it when it is really cold I find. Many days of this for me up in the arctic so I always give it some slow, steady pulls before even attempting to try start it. After that it is 2 pulls almost every time.

On the bold, have tried that not too long after I got the sled but would still have to pull slow, steady a few times before using the e-start as the starter wasn't strong enough for the 9. So it is about $800 paperweight the e-start. Off it came after a month of on it.

Some how that doesn't surprise me...lol. I have started mine at 12 below before. :face-icon-small-ton

When super cold out you know negative temps I usually turn it over a few times by the primary just to make sure everything moves and ease the strain on the pull cord and related assy. Also make sure cord has not lifted off the roller.
 
cord was off roller the first time , but then after a few times and reading these posts i realize its the nature of the 900 beast!
THX IVE LEARNED TO SLOW PULL AFEW TIMES TO LOOSEN UP THEN SHE STARTS ALL THE TIME....LOVE MY INJECTION!:face-icon-small-coo:lol:
 
Yeah, when I was at work wife cannot pull it by the cord so that was the reason of buying the e-start. When really cold out every time the battery would die before it would even start.

need to have it plugged into a battery tender and when it is really cold take a set of jumper cables and use your truck battery, works much better.
 
I was thinking of attatching a magnetic block heater or some other haetdevice or heat lamp....something....any suggestions anyone tried anything of the sort?? thx

I have a heat magnet but where would you stick it. They are for warming up the oil and there is non in the 900. You would have to do a coolant heater. Heat lamp might work but not sure how you would do it. maybe if you opened the hood and put a packing blanket over it. Think you would create a fire hazard though.

Here is something I have done. Park in the trailer and put a heater in the trailer aiming at the sled.

After my crank ripped off and engine rebuilt from warranty(they also replaced the starter motor also since it broke it) I just left the whole e-start off and never bothered with it again. Now parts have been scattered about and only can find the motor and a few parts.

For when it is really cold out and my back is acting up again I just put a hair dryer on for 10-15 minutes and she is good to pull 1-2 pulls to start. Also warms up the oil to flow better.
 
The first time I tried pulling my 900 over after sitting in very cold conditions I damn near ripped my arm off. Now I do like was said above. Pull slow a few times then grit yer teeth and give it a rip.
