Handlebar rear shock adjuster not working

2001 Mountain Cat EFI 600 with the handlebar mounted adjuster for the rear shock. When I turn it it stays loose and will eventually spin itself even looser. It has to be turned all the way tight just to keep the adjuster from backing itself off. Is there a way to repair or rebuild this?

it adjusts the pressure on the front skid shock

crank it in, lots of ski pressure

let it out very little ski pressure

Yeah I know what it does, the problem is if its anything but all the way cranked in, it will spin itself loose. It doesn't stay in place. So if I loosen it (turn counter-clockwise) even just a tiny bit, it will vibrate and spin by itself until the adjuster wheel is about to come off.
