both compostit stock both look the same. bullits look close to the same?

i have hunted with a diffrent 7mm before and like it?

know nothing about the 257 mag.

any one know what one has cheaper shells?

any info would be great.

will use it for hunting thats probly it.

well where you say 257 mag are you talking about the weatherby cartridge? depends on what your hunting 7mm would be more versatile as you can get bullets in light grain as well as heavy where the 257 is some what limited

What are you talking about, do you mean .257 Roberts as that is the only caliber I know of in .257. Then with the 7mm, do you mean 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm Win Short Mag, or 7 stw?

257 weatherby probably has a little better ballistics but the 7mm is more versatile and the ammo will be cheaper and easier to find if things go bad during "the messiah" administration. Weatherby stuff is great but the ammo is a little spendy unless you reload. Just my .02.

Got a buddy with his FFL and is Tackleberry to a T. Whenever we go on a trip there are no less than 3 guns in the vehicle..................anywho he loves the 257. That's his main shooter for deer and speedgoats. And the ballistics are great on it.

I think you should consider the 300 Win Mag...great ballistics, shoots really flat. I too have never heard of the 257, interesting. But the 7mm is a great caliber too.

I am amazed none of you have heard of the mighty .257 Weatherby Mag. It was Roy Weatherby's favorite round he made. My Dad has shot it from Coyotes to Moose for over 30 yrs. VERY fast and flat shooting. Much faster than the 7mm Rem mag.

Here are a few other .25 cal rounds

250 Savage
.257 Roberts
.257 Roberts Ackley Improved (AI)
25-06 Remington
.257 Wincheter Super Short Mag (WSSM)
25-06 Rem AI
.257 STW
.257 WSM
Lazzeroni Scramjet

to name a few

how did you know we bought a 300 Win Mag too!!!! my mom wants that one though so i only get to pick between the 257 and the 7mm

here is a pic of what the 257 looks like

If you're only going to use it for deer size critters and smaller I would get the 257 if this will be the only rifle you have for any and all size animals, the 7mm would be better.

X2
257 would probably get the job done on an elk, but shot placement would be critical. 7 would work nicely on most animals, plus ammo is cheaper and easier to come by.

Neither, go with the .257 STW or the 7mm STW. They both use the same case 1 is just necked down and fire formed. 257 is bang on out to 500yds....

What 7mm cartridge? 7mm Remington or Weatherby?

The .257 Weatherby Mag is about the flatest shooting out there.

Great long range deer cartridge. Can be used for elk, but IMO there are better options.

Ballistically the 7mm is a much better bullet featuring higher ballistic coefficients and higher sectional density.

I'm not a huge 7mm fan and prefer the .300. I have a .300 WSM but the 300 Win Mag or Ultra Mag are excellent cartridges.

I also like the 270. Ballistically inbetween the 7mm and 257. Good all around cartridge with plenty for deer and on the small side for elk but works.

For a women the 270 is an excellent cartridge due to less recoil and far cheaper ammo then either the 257 or 7mm. That would be my recommendation.

I also had 270 WSM is a great cartridge with more knockdown, flatter shooting but a little more recoil and higher ammo cost.

Just my 2 cents

Too many variables unanswered to say..

Do you reload?.. If not.. 7mm rem.. would be a better option because 257 weath. are pretty expensive..

Do you like a lot of knockdown power?
Shoot 100 or 500 yards??

Both calibers are good.. I personally like some of the other versions of the 7mm such as the Stw or ultra's... the weath. is a great cartridge and pretty impressive.. but I personally like the 25 stw a little better..

Either option you take wont be a wrong decision.. remember.. put on some great optics.. and shoot shoot shoot shoot.. :D
