guideing service in mccall

It might work and McCall defiantly has the terrain for a guide service. The biggest issue would be affording the liability insurance and permits to run such a thing on state and federal property. You could always just wing it and take people out on a donation basis but if someone got hurt, stuck over night or lost it could cost you dearly.
Check with the forest service and see what it would take... I'm guessing something like the permits outfitters have to have. I could be wrong but you'll want to cover your a$$ if something bad happens.
With your filming background you could offer up a video of their adventure.:)

Great Idea!

How many people would use a guide service in mccall that was set up like burandts back country adventures type deal?

If you could work out all the details that would be awesome! From experience, Phil did a great job of getting us started, then we took it from there, how good would that be to have someone show ya around and film you at the same time!
Good on you Phil!:D

It will work

Hey man, just like we talked about, Don't ask for input man you guys grab the f-ing sled by the throttle and go for it. Do what you love to do and do not let a thing stand in your way or someone else will ride off with your dream. Get off your *** and get it going.
See you this weekend

Phil, There is an industry standard test and here is the summary...

Go down to the local humane society and pick out a minimum of 8 cats. Look for the really dumb ones and make sure you get a couple of good wild barn cats as well...(we'll want to make this a challenge..plus you need to "practice like you play")

Now let them all out in your house and then {simply} try to get them back into a box or crate. If you can accomplish this feat in a day and survive you qualify for your "OFFICIAL SNOWMOBILE GUIDES" license.

We've gotten involved in a much better racket than that recently. You should consider looking into this one. Struther's or Kirsch (they both are currently practicing this business model) send out, or take out a crew normally led by Pintler or Kirsch himself and then suck the residual profits from the resulting carnage. You as the "guide" or Pintler as in most of the cases I've been associated with receives compensation in the form of a commission on replacement A arms, hoods, and side panels. Overnight camping is extra!

I think something on a smaller scale would work, like just the guide part. It has to be affordable. Burandt has the name recognition to book up a couple years but after that its gonna taper off. I used a quasi guide last March, with 3 of us he wanted $350. It was kinda worth it, but the snow was real deep so we didnt cover alot of ground. Also, his sled had more parts hanging off than Ive ever seen before. If you kept it low key, are a good guy to hang around with for a day or 2, give the impression that you can keep people safe in a blizzard, and make sure the customer rides the kinda terrain they want to ride, then you could do pretty well.

thanks for input everyone. i am working on getting this going. Im not worried about bieng a guide. I have ridden mccall for 14 years and I have taken handfuls of groups out this season and do not have any trouble rounding them up. I plan to have a full lodge to sleep around 6 people. We would serve breakfast, lunch on the hill, and dinner. I would also have a 80 by 80 shop for sleds overnight and a place for people to work on their stuff after riding. As for videoing guests, I am planning this to.

yes that is considered too. I know it wouldnt take off like burandts but there is nothing in mccall that offers any guiding. So i think it would bring people who have not been here before.

anyone i have taken out this year feel free to explain your feelings on how i did?

You likely will do well with the guide service, and the lodging part also if you dont take on a bunch of debt to do it. Start small, make some money and pack some away, then grow. But if you already have the lodge/shop maybe you can make some income off it. And if you dont have any competition that sure helps. Hard part might be deciding where to go ride, to many options.

Have you looked into getting a permit from the USFS? And/or is there one available from the now shut down Tamarack operation that you could buy or take over? Getting a permit could take several years from the government, if I know them. Spud

a guide and a film crew all in one i like it!

I had a guide and a film crew this last weekend. the guide part worked out real well but the "film crew" was too busy riding to take a vid worth anything. ;) just make sure you don't go that route.

good luck man, it sounds like a great idea and you vision of the accomodations would be a sweet setup.

Are you kidding me, remember that day you took us out and it took us over an hour to get back to the trail(we were only a mile off trail), you swore you knew where you were, ya right.

:DJust kidding, Phil is an excellent guide and he's local and knows all of the sweet spots to ride, just don't show everyone all of the honey holes, I think a guiding service would work pretty well down there, "If you build it they will come."

Phil,
Price will dictate everything! There are alot of people who would be willing to split a 2 or 3 hundred dollar bill, between a few guys, to see area's that they've never been to before. Much more than that and I don't know that you would get that much business. Also, you might think about the family groups that are on vacation. Not just the guys but the whole family. I know that this could work up there but like it was said before, Burandts model will only work for short term. Especially with the economy the way it is now.

sad to be labeled the guide let alone the film crew! though i was just one of the guys along for the ride:(

I was told there was only one guide/outfitters license in that area and it belongs to Tamarack. The guy that used to own Meadowbrook B and B sold it to Tamarack. I sure would be afraid to take people out that you charged money for, without all the legalities being right and lots of liability ins. Otherwise it's a good idea. I wouldn't need it, if I want to learn something I don't know, I'll ask Rob (RK mtr works) who I grew up with, to show me around.

Yha, the forest service has been known to "deal" with unlicensed guides. Don't go there. Something tells me Tamarack would being willing to sell you anything they have.
