Curious to see what kind of market there would be for an affordable backcountry guide service in or around the McCall, ID area.

I am fairly certain that if you don't already have the permit, you won't get one. There are a small amount available and they are gone. Could be wrong, but you may want to look into it if you haven't already. I know of people waiting already.

Devil I'm aware of the permits down there, I've got a few things in the works. Need to kinda feel things out before you get to gunghoe. I was just using McCall as more of a name that people recognize here in central Idaho. There is permits open just north and south of payette national forest as of today.

A guide in McCall would be good, I have rode there several times and have not found the good stuff. Skill building would be cool too if it was more than tree riding. I am more into jumping and drops, went to a riding clinic last year and the tree riding was not for me.

What's with permit?

Howdy y'all, I'm from Texas, why do you need a permit? Only in that area or everywhere?

Why? Because all the riding areas are on Gov. owned land and you need a permit for EVERYTHING! This is the case everywhere (almost). Eric

Hummm . . . not sure i am in favor of MORE people finding out about the good riding areas in the McCall area. There are already WAY too many newbies ripping up our pristine fresh pow before i get there.

I have seen the parking lot nearly full of peeps from Washington. Nice people . . but they need to learn how to park efficiently in the parking lot though. All it takes is a few to get things started wrong and the whole parking lot is in gridlock...lol

Just sayin . . .not ranting . . . =)

Cheers

Couldn't agree more with that Timbre, I was more or less using McCall as a name in Central Idaho that most people have heard of and or is on their destination list. Always have to keep a few secret places secret!

If it is legit it is all good. There are already unlicensed under the table bed/breakfasts and "guides" here that are hurting the local economy in a bad way.

Can't be half as bad as the situation in BC, and more specifically Whistler. At least the US Forest Service appears to take their policies seriously and takes action against serial violators.

I really do think our area could use snowmobile guide services and I've heard there are permits in hand but I don't hear of anyone guiding? I'm not on top of who's trying to do what now but I do know of several people who have looked into it and it sounds like it's a very difficult process?

We have several backcountry guiding operations for skiers and snowboarders - Brundage Mountain has a cat skiing operation and then there is the Payette Powder Guides operating out of Lick Creek summit.

So I am surprised we don't have a legit business actively providing snowmobile guiding services. I've been to Togwotee and it seems like their snowmobile guide service was doing really well! I think our area would benefit from one as well!

My exact thoughts Sarah, I know in years past a few people who have tried to get permits as well and failed to obtain them. I wish whoever held the permits would pass them down to someone who is actually going to utilize them to there full potential. But there is a national forest not too far away that has permits open!

There is always a chance that the current permit holders don't want sled tours.

There used to be grazing rights on Moscow Mountain but there was a certain "anti-grazer" that held the permits to keep it from happening.

Something to consider.

Bkinz - do you know who actually has the permits in the McCall area? I wonder why they don't utilize the permits they have.

I do not personally know who holds the permits, although I feel like Volcano Buster hit the head on the nail.
