Guardsmans pics 12-17-08

Snow conditions were ok with some powder but it was very heavy and a 1/2" thick layer of ice about half way down. Plenty of land mines, dont dare dig in hard yet. Avalanche conditions were very high as shown in pics. We set a small one off on a very small hill that i have never seen slide before. By the looks of things today i think that there is going to be some unusually massive slides this year.

The bad news is it looks like the avy's on the back side of the Great Western lift is sliding on the ice layer and not taking it down with them   I have seen that slide HUGE before. Most people sit at the bottom in the flat and when it goes big it can cover that meadow. Please be careful.....for me, I think I will stay away from the elevations with the ice layer! I have NO desire to go in an avy or see one of my buds go that way.

That first picture in the first post looks like a avy trap waiting to happen.

nice pics looks like a couple of handsome fellers rode guardsman today.:D
by the way RMK756 has some skills on the snowmobiles

Marc,

I couldn't get Kerry on the phone today, figured he was with you. Didn't see any green in the photos, did he stay home or make it over the top?

Bostetter has been socked in all week.......

It looks like they are aware.......the original forcast was updated just before 10:30 AM today. DON'T forget to check the UAC forcasts before going. We are lucky to have some of the best Avalanche experts in the business right here in Utah. Use their advisories and heed the warnings. Had i read this avy report there is no way i would have been on the wasatch front today.

p.s. Does anybody know anything about the Snowmobiler Avy they mention in the "recent acticvity?" Sounds like it was a close call.

I have personally seen the ice layers in the snow up at Guardsman Pass when I went riding a week ago. It is not funny stuff and I am personally scared of what is to come this year with avalanches.

Having said that, what are some of the "closest" open riding areas to Salt Lake that aren't as "treacherous" as Guardsman or American Fork Canyon? My brother and I are going riding in the morning but we're not sure where to ride yet. I'm a somewhat experienced rider but my brother isn't so anything that is "open" and thick with powder, we're there.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Head up to heber city. go east on center street like about 8-9 miles, you will see a snowmobile parking lot- ride east about 6 miles- keep your brother on the road.

peace out,

We are suppose to get lots more snow up here today. It snowed all yesterday too! It is going to be super deep

Johnny....

I have been up there 4 times now and it's a great place to ride AFTER the "6 mile pass" before entering the Unitas. I did not take any pictures because I was having too much fun riding in the deep, fresh and soft powder.

However, I will have a video camera mounted on my helmet and if I see anything worthy of post, I will be back to post it. I've had it on during the last few rides but nothing came out of it. I'm still a rookie helmet camera operator.

Live long and prosper! :D
