Grooming/Plowing in other states besides Wa.

I have been thinking and maybe somebody already knows the answer, how do states like Montana & Wyoming pay for their grooming? I've been to West Yellowstone/Big Sky area and from what I recall, it seems like they groom most of the week to keep the trails nice. I would also think that the midwest states would have this problem figured out as to how much the user has to pay, especially since they have thousands of miles to groom and plow. Just my .02..........

P.P.

In SD, Part of the funding comes directly from registrations.
If I remember correctly, it is $20/yr

More comes indirectly from registrations, meaning there is an equation they use, where they figure each registered sled will consume 100 gallons of gasoline/year. So they re-imburse the amount of road tax for that much gas to the trail fund.

The state of WA refunds 21 cents of the road taxes paid on each gallon of gas to the snowmobile fund.
They use 135 gallons as the average amount of gas that each registered snowmobile uses each season.
This equates to $28.35 each year for each registered sled. This is in addition to the licensing fee that we pay each year for our sleds minus overhead costs. I don't know how much money the snowmobile fund gets from that.

In MN the DNR has a fund from sled registration/stud permits/etc that goes to grant/aid trails, other money comes from club dues and donations.

wish they never groomed where we ride, keep the wanna be mountain sledders out of my area!!!

Wyoming charges $25 plus $1 S&R for both in state and out of state registrations. This plus a certain amount of gas tax returned for each sled and some trails grants pays for all the grooming.
To Sandman, When you are as old as I am(69 in a month) you will be very glad for a groomed trail for the ride home!! Thanks

In addition to what you listed, in MN, snowmobile trails are supported by a small fraction of the gasoline tax. The assumption being snowmobiles pay highway tax at the pump price, but operate off-highway.
If I recall correctly the formula is 1-percent OF 1-percent of MN gas tax.
( A fraction of a percent, IOW)
Now MNUSA is keeping an eye on tree hugger groups such as MRR that ate trying to get legislation passed to take the gas tax money away from trails.

If that happens, the trail system will be badly hurt.

People need to support MNUSA, and their lobbying effort.

Here in Wa.

I know the topic is other than Wa. state. But, here in the great state of Wa. the government can deviate from the original budget as they see fit. Even if it means take from one group and give to another. Thank you all of you Democrats in Olympia! On a side note Seattle is the second gayest city in the country. Imagine that!

in idaho, state law says sticker moneys go to state parks and rec, who disperce to the counties indicated on registration forms.

gas tax moneys buy capital equipment like groomers.
