Did anyone (other than a bunny hugger!) know about this so-called "comment period"? First I heard of it!

....or....am I just that far behind the eight-ball on this one? What was the outcome, if any?

"A recent public comment period on the proposal yielded 253 comments. Short said more than 90 percent opposed the parking lot. Sandoval said about half were form letters and postcards that originated with the Biodiversity Conservation Alliance."

Thanks for bringing me up to speed! The link was a good read and brings up some things to really think about (both good and bad) about a parking lot!:face-icon-small-con

I would definately agree that if they DID actually put in lot, ANY other places to park after it fills up will be a 'ticket-and-tow' deal. Seen it before!:(

A good sized lot would sure be nice though.....;)

At the club meeting last night we had a rep from the Forest Service Join us to discuss some issues as we see it in the Snowy's. I am not 100% convenience that the parking lot is completely a dead issue. The Forest service and other recognize there is a problem, and most parties involved agree that something needs to be done. The issues that they pointed out last night is the over all location of such a parking lot.
1. At the base of the Mountain is not a vary good option due to lack of snow and the length of the ride.
2. Above the s-curve is a poor location and would be hard to keep it plowed and open.

So where does that leave us? I'm not really sure, but I think it is safe to say there is more than one negative force working against the parking lot.

WyoRMK is right, that story was posted in July. The FS has said it will have another comment period before the final decision. This morning I posted another update...they have decided to postpone the parking lot for now in order to do more evaluation of locations/engineering. So...not killed, just postponed.

Thanks for the updates, guys!:beer;:)

Please; as soons as they start taking about a 'public comment' release date let us know! We need to out-comment the opposition this time, and in a BIG way!;)

Green Rock Parking

I'm on the Wyoming State Trails Advisory Council and this was sent to the State Trails Program by the USFS relating to the Green Rock Parking Area and dated Jan. 11, 2010. Wonder what they mean by "viable"???

File Code: 1950/2300
Date: January 11, 2010

Dear Interested Party,
Based on our preliminary analysis, NEPA for a proposed snowmobile parking lot will be postponed until further notice. There are still unanswered questions regarding the size requirements, and engineering and resource-related considerations. We are not proposing to eliminate the parking lot from consideration, only to evaluate a viable location and size at a later date.
It is our intent, under this proposal, to continue to allow parking around the Green Rock area between the cattle guard and the turn around. However, I would like to remind you that the Green Rock Picnic Area is reserved for non-trailer parking only during the winter. Thank you for your consideration.
Another project that has been removed from the Proposed Action since we did our initial scoping in June is the full suite of proposed improvements on Towner Lake Road. We will fix the drainage issues at the approach as well as conduct other needed maintenance, but from conversation with the Wyoming Department of Transportation, it is their opinion that the sighting distance at the approach to this road is not unsafe, so there is no further need to adjust this feature.
We are still evaluating the other proposals and expect a draft environmental document available for comment in February.
If you have further questions or concerns about this issue, please feel free to give Mary Sanderson of my staff or myself a call at 745-2300.
Sincerely,

/s/ Larry W. Sandoval Jr.
