Yampa, Colo. July 17, 2008) – A mountain biker who illegally trespassed in the Sarvis Creek Wilderness June 26 was issued a ticket last week by Acting Yampa District Ranger Josh Voorhis. The Wilderness Act of 1964 states that there shall be "no use of motor vehicles, motorized equipment … or other form of mechanical transport..." in designated Wilderness areas.
"He rode right by the entry sign at the wilderness boundary," said Voorhis. "The sign clearly indicates that no motorized or mechanized vehicles are allowed."
The man subsequently became lost, spent the night in the forest, walked out and called Routt County Search and Rescue. "He has the option of paying a $500 fine, plus $25 administration costs, or he can go to court," Voorhis said. The fine for vehicle intrusions in wilderness recently increased in Colorado from $50 to $500. The maximum penalty for this offense is a $5,000 fine and six months in jail.
