Grease everywhere HELP!!!!

I have a 2003 mxz rev 800 and i have noticed that there has been alot of grease that is comming out of the bottom end of my sled. The grease seems to be comming out from where the primary clutch is and then it is splattering all over the engine bay. There is grease and oil everywhere!!!! mostly around the clutches and under the engine. Does this meen that the PTO seal is gone and needs to be replaced? if so do i have to take the whole engine apart or can i just take off the primary clutch and put a new seal in. I am new at this stuff so usefull information would help a great deal.

thanks in advance

pto seal

sounds like you need to replace the seal these are notorious for going bad around 2000 or so miles and yes you do need to pull the motor to do this. you might get away with just regreasing it from the little nipple behind it but hard to say how much is gone and how dry your bearing is.

My 08 XP 800 is doing the same thing. I told my dealer about it and he says the grease is getting pushed out of the PTO bearings by the crankcase pressure. The bearing will eventually dry up and lock-up. He said it could be fixed with the engine in place by removing the outer seal and then replacing the seal on the bearing itself. There are two bearings there so how do they know if it just the outer bearing the grease is coming from or is the grease from the inner bearing pushing through the outer bearing and out the outer seal??? I have about 400-500 miles since I noticed the grease, tic-toc-tic toc, still on warranty:) If your motor has never been apart I would look at pulling the engine and re-greasing all the bearings, possibly replacing the two PTO bearings. Bad part of this is you will be without sled for 1-2 weeks

That seal needs to be inserted while the case halves are apart. Do it now while you still can do it for the cost of gaskets, gease, seals and rings. Ether you or the shop do the labor - it is cheap now. Once failure has happened the price goes exponential.

Our 2003 did the same thing at about 3000 miles. The grease coming out is a good thing. After that nothing good is going to happen.

My theory is that the heat generated by incorrect clutch calibration causes premature failure of the seal. The bearing is next if not caught in time.

2008's are next as they have clutching issues as well. Yes, we have one of those too!
