Grand Lake is in Good Shape!!!

Hi All,

Just spoke with the Grand Lake Trail Groomers President (Ami) and she said they will start grooming this weekend! There are a few rocks sticking out on the trail from town, but once you get up high we're talking "Chest Deep"!! There is enough snow in town to ride on the streets (legal), especially on the side streets which they don't plow as much. As of this morning, Grand Lake is still open water, and Shadow Mtn Lake and Lake Granby are still thin, so unless you're an accomplished open water rider (Thuderstruck 2) or a really good cold-water swimmer, I'd stay away from the lakes for now. I'm going to try to ride next week (gotta work), so I'll try to keep you updated!

I got another report.

You can NOT easily ride from town to the trails, therer are many exposed rocks and dirt. We still need a bit more snow in town (new storm coming Sunday night!). However, trailering to, and riding from Idelglenn Trail Head just outside of town is no problem.

Grand Lake Report

Here's the scoop on Grand Lake, I went up yesterday.

- you can't ride from town. the trail off of Golf Course road is CLOSED and doesn't have much snow at all.

-trailered to On the Trail and North Supply is great. It was freshly groomed with no real traffic on it.

-The field below Porphrey's and if you hang a right down there is great. No real tracks as of yet but we were there for a while.

-Porphrey's is wind blown as usual, so there are better places to hang out.

-Gravel Mtn had plenty of snow and is fine not much traffic at all.

Overall, snow has not set up and is tough to get through, yet there is plenty of snow in various meadows, probably not enough to go off trail in the trees...Trails are in great shape.

i agree

we took the super modified 120's to IG today and i almost turned around when i pulled and and went back to elk meadow. very thin and i was surprised the groomer had even been through.

beginnings of a good base but i was glad we never made it into town because turning around would have been disappointing with 2 8yr olds

Ah, can't wait for the Grand Lake to be full of snow and up to its usual amount of excellence. We were there this weekend getting some chores done at the cabin but had no time to trailer up to Idleglenn and ride. Looks like the start of a good base is there. Hope to see you guys up on SuperChicken!

Grand Lake

I have never been to Grand Lake. Rumors are that it's amazing. I have also herd that it's too crowded and difficult for non-locals to find great powder and sick hill climbs without help form locals. Any truth? Also, when is the best time to go? I want to check it out. We ride mostly Northern New Mexico and Southern CO.

It is amazing.

It can be crowded, esp on the weekends in peak season.

You can find good, untouched snow on your own, but it can be difficult esp if you only have one or two days. Local guidance is a big help.

Jan, Feb, and March, are the prime months, but it can start as early as Holloween (we're still waitng for really good snow this year) and end as late as Mid-May. It all depends on the season's snow fall and temps.

Let me know when you're coming up and I'll try to hook-up with you.

Let me know when you're coming up. Weekdays are better than weekends for me (esp Wed & Thur), but after the holidays my schedule will free-up a bit.

We got about 4 inches overnight (12/12) in town. Generally the snow is double what we get in town up on the higher trails. It's supposed to snow all weekend so I would imagine by Monday you can ride in town and from town to the trails.

Sunday, Dec 14

We got 2-3 fresh inches in town over night. Kinda lame considering Summit County got a foot! However, I've seen it many times when town got a few inches and there's a fresh foot up high. Anyone ride Grand Lake on Sunday? Let us know.

coooooold

Rode GL today. Not bad at all. Trails were just groomed and there wasn't anyone out today so it was a WOT day. Wind blew most of the new snow into the trees. there were some great pockets that allowed a few carves but mostly took it easy. Up top was wind raped and super chicken just slid all the way down to rock. Down lower and the backside of super had good snow/coverage. Storm was setting in when we left... snow snow snow!

It's snowing again here. Maybe 5-6 fresh inches in town today. I'm sure there's lots more up top. As of today, there's still no riding from town, but I'm sure it's getting close.

going to be trouring around a couple of newbs on sunday. Should be fun tho. They just blindly bought sleds and are stoked... might get interesting

Hey at least they bought sleds...better than the ones that just want to keep borrowing an extra!

Max will the restraunt be open Christmas day.

Negative Ghost Rider. I'm spending the day with 'the fam'. We will be open Christmas Eve and, of course, the Friday after Christmas. Stop-in and see us!

NOTE: The trail to/from town will be OPEN by this Saturday morning (12/20) at the latest, probably Friday evening. This info is rock solid, I got it from a VERY reliable source.

Does anyone have an update on the snow conditions in the area?

Any info is appreciated.

I was at the Trail Groomers meeting last night and spoke to the head groomer who said the snow up high is waist-deep with a good base. The trail from/to town should be open by this evening. Let her rip! And we seem to be having some sort of front coming through right now. It getting pretty windy and there are some dark clouds to the North West, so maybe we've got some more on the way!
