GPS&NAV SYSTEMS(automobile use)

Looking for input on these as the mrs. & her mother are taking a trip of some east coast states next week for about a month.Are they relatively easy to use,which have better mapping etc, or would they be better off with a road atlas?

I love mine - it's a Magellan Roadmate I have had about 3 years, I don't even take a paper map with me when I travel now. When I replace it though (its map data is becomming outdated) I'll probably get a Garmin Nuvi or a Tom Tom based on positive owner reviews I've read. If you can use a cell phone you can operate one of these, they are pretty simple.
