Govt shutdown=all riding areas open this year!

Yep my hopes and dreams of the "Montana Epic Tag" have finally become a reality. Should be pretty good pickings for the massive bull elk, moose, griz, big horn, muley and bison I'm going to be whacking this weekend. Only downside is I'll have to find some more freezer space and find a cheaper taxidermist.

So not to be that guy, but the shutdown will end and we need to be able to, at that time, not allow "our" behavior to be used as ammo to close more areas.....

I'll give ya a thanks for that m1. I'm sure the OP was just going for the humoruos side. Would be great to hit some pristine wilderness, but as you say would just be more ammo for the greenies. However, I will say if everything ever gets shut down I will be mounting my AR to my tunnel :face-icon-small-ton

But don't you wonder if...

The federal government never came back if the forest would blow up? It wouldn't, we would all enjoy it and wouldn't need the forest circus to put up gates and rules that only apply to a certain user group that isn't funded by millions of dollars. hmmmm.....

Been thinking about all the recreational closures supposedly caused by the shut down. National Parks/monuments closed due to lack of "facilities." In the past, Colorado has shut state parks for the same reason, and I don't know that all reopened. Two points come to mind.

One-- why do so many parks and user areas have to have flush toilets and trash service, etc. or be closed? Do people really expect to go outdoors AND have these conveniences? Worse, why do the "unimproved" areas have to be closed? Can't we just go hike, hunt, fish, or pursue other usual activities?

Two -- What does it say about users if the land and improvements (vault toilets, campgrounds, even roads and all trails) are endangered because the responsible agency office is closed? That the loss of patrol means the area has to be closed?

Maybe they are closing them because the agencies are worried they won't collect their user fees, even at the unmanned fee stations. Would it be too cynical to suggest that the closures are to make us try to make Congress do something? Isn't that sort of a lost cause demonstrated by the years of congressional inaction on all matters?

I am offended by someone insinuating that the President of the United States should be hunted down and killed. I my not agree with what is going on but this is still America and I am still proud to be an American even with all of its flaws.

Back to the OG post. From my understanding if the Government is closed then Federal lands would be closed...including trailheads and riding areas.

Although i would freely ride as normal...I believe the letter of the law would mean all public riding areas would be closed. Are they even open to issue sled tags right now?

'Sort of' is the answer I keep getting here.

National forests are still open. I've been mountainbiking just like I normally would but these aren't from any sort of trailhead where a service is provided other than signs. The way it's handled in california is that the various FS offices provide plowing contracts to various people/companies and pay for grooming the same way. So if this keeps dragging on into real snow months, there may be a lot fewer plowed parking lots at trailheads and less grooming.....even though the swaths of land are still open to sledding.

I think it's similar in other states.

Places where the FS or BLM has no involvement wouldn't be affected. But any local setup that involves federal money to operate is a different story. Something that MAY happen is that they actually DO close trailheads because they can't be policed by FS employees checking registration. That would be a clusterfvck.

You guys have some sort of federal green stickers you have to buy every year? We just do a state based regstration from the dmv just like a car.

From what I understand all non-essential pencil pushers, gate attendants and park staff are on leave, while the enforement officers are working. So you will still get your azz in the ringer if you get caught doing something you shouldn't be doing. Federal lands such as Natl. Forest are still open but Natl. parks are closed. It would be nearly impossible to close and enforce that closure on BLM or Natl. Forest. But state parks have gates at the entrances so it's pretty easy to close.

And our OHV tags are state issued.

Locally, the National Forest here is still open. Far as I know, hunting seasons will still go as normal. Not that many USFS law enforcement officers here anyway. If the shutdown did persist until sledding season, the local area will probably have groomed trails as well. Rocky Mountain National Park is closed. Lucky they got some roads open into Estes Park before the Trail Ridge Road closed for the winter. Me? I'm furloughed.
