DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR on Wednesday issued penalties and fines to the No. 7 team that competes in the Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rule infractions found during Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway.

GordonThe No. 7 car, driven and owned by Robby Gordon, was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-3.10A (unapproved front bumper cover) of the 2008 NASCAR rule book. The violations were found during opening day inspection for the Daytona 500 on Feb. 8.

As a result, Gordon has been penalized 100 championship driver and owner points.

Crew chief Frank Kerr has been fined $100,000, suspended for the next six Sprint Cup Series events until April 9 and placed on probation until Dec. 31, 2008.

Gordon finished eighth in the season-opening Daytona 500. With the penalty, he drops to 40th in points with 42 -- 16 behind 35th-place Casey Mears.

Gordon had announced his switch from Ford to Dodge, along with a new partnership with Gillett Evernham Motorsports, five days earlier and inadvertently had used a Dodge Charger nose that had been submitted to NASCAR but had not yet been approved. Before qualifying for the Daytona 500 on Feb. 10, Gordon replaced the part with an approved Dodge Avenger nose.

NASCAR screws Robby over every chance they get!

I have heard alot of people call him a dink and such but honestly i think he is a pretty good driver. And can drive the hell out of a baja truck.

I got to have dinner with him a few years back after we got done customizing his trailer, and he is a pretty cool guy.

And if you dig deeper into this story, you'll find out that it was a screw up by the parts supplier and the 7 team did not know it wasn't an approved part. We can get pissed off at Nascar all we want, but what's anyone going to do about it? They're the only show in town...

If you don't think that all teams arn't trying "stuff" you may be mistaken. It's always been part of racing. Now they are putting their foot down hard, no deviation from the rules at all. 24, 48, 55 last year got hit hard.

I honestly think Robby's deal was a mistake in which he had no part in knowing about. Rules are rules but I just don't think they would have touched the golden boys as much. Maybe they would have, maybe not?

Gordon has had some bad news lately, first the Dakar gets cancelled, then his car fails tech, and now it's 100 points and a 100 grand. OUCH!

So whats up with this, he runs a ford, oh wait, now a dodge car, but still drives a Chevy trophy truck? I kinda thought that you had to be one of the three, or four now that toyota has come in! Wonder what Chevy/Ford says about swapping brands depending on the racing?

It doesn't matter if it was a mistake or not, his team is responsible for knowing what is going on with his car. Robby should stick to baja racing.

Not that I am a Robbie fan but what the 24, 48 and 55 teams did last year was a blatant attempt at cheating, and Hendrick teams are notorious for cheating and interpretting the rules as they see fit. I am kinda torn on this deal because it sounds like an honest mistake and NASCAR even said that there is hardly a noticeable differance in the Avenger and Charger nose.
