Wondering if anyone has opinions/experience with either product.

Looking at a 2016 GMC Sierra Denali with Carplay but no Auto? Will GM do a backfit to allow Droid users like me to have the same advantages? Similar to what Milehighassassin says will happen with the new camera system?

It's weird as the Google Auto website lists 2016 GMC Sierra on it's site. Would the GMC Sierra Denali be different for their infotainment system than the GMC Sierra?

Thanks.

I have a 2016 Denali. I like it other than you need to be plugged in to use it. The GPS maps are better than the factory GPS, also the navigation is easier. It displays my text and Whatsapp messages.

GM has an update for the 16's to allow the use of android phones.
Are u for sure on this. I have heard talk about it but haven't seen anything about it being released. I have a 16 and have been waiting for the update.

Picked Up New Truck last Night

Just took delivery on my 2016 so will be making appt. with service to get Auto installed.

I do not have an iPhone so can't give any feedback on Carplay.

Until last night I actually thought the Pandora app on the menu would use the 4Glte connection directly but I find it just uses the app on the phone.

Not sure which data plan it uses but I am pretty sure it's the one on the phone.

Glad I went with the 1 Gig plan. Other than an ipad not sure what would be using data from the truck? Maybe other apps on the phone would go to wi-fi but not Pandora?

As mentioned Google has an update for the GM vehicles so that it works.

-Data for Pandora, etc... It generally uses your phone's data plan. There is a wireless network setup on 2016 (some 2015's) that uses Onstar. You get 3 months/3 gigs to try it out. If you have AT&T as your cellular provider you can add your vehicle to your shared data plan for like $10 a month. If you don't have AT&T, you can buy a plan through Onstar. The vehicle has a better antenna than your phone so the data strength seems to be faster and stronger. I don't think you can use the Pandora feature without a phone paired to your vehicle. You can setup your phone to connect to the vehicle's wireless network which maybe that it is just using the same shared data plan. Or you can use a device that does not have a cellular network and only wireless such as an iPad.

You do need to have your phone plugged in to use Carplay/Android Auto. With Android Auto you need to install an application on your phone, the iPhone is ready to go out of the box.

Carplay is absolutely awesome. No other way to put it. Apple requires that you plug in, for the amount of video going through the system, I don't think the bluetooth can keep up with that data. It also charges your phone. It won't be long until every vehicle has this feature.

If you press and hold your voice button on the steering wheel it will use Siri for commands. If you just do a short press it will use the vehicles voice command system (intellilink). Siri is a better system.

Android Auto

I got the software installed Monday May 2. I'm still learning. You need to reboot your phone and re-pair the phone to the radio. Wish the dealer would have given me some instructions like this. At first I thought the install was a problem as Bluetooth wouldn't work consistently.

I haven't figured out how to get Pandora display to show up when playing on Auto. The sound signal sent via the data cable seems superior to Bluetooth.

I did not realize that there are actual apps to choose from Google Play that are for Android Auto. I sure could benefit from some sort of tutorial or tips sheet. Interesting that we get these high tech features with little to no instruction on how to best use them.

When I use Pandora I'm on the truck wi-fi so it would seem I am on the truck data plan? I'll let you know if I can see it on data plans for either source.
