Environmental regulation

The tetra-ethyl lead found in leaded avgas and its combustion products are potent neurotoxins that have been shown in scientific research to interfere with brain development in children. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has noted that exposure to even very low levels of lead contamination has been conclusively linked to loss of IQ in children's brain function tests, thus providing a high degree of motivation to eliminate lead and its compounds from the environment.[13][14]

“ While lead concentrations in the air have declined, scientific studies have demonstrated that children's neurological development is harmed by much lower levels of lead exposure than previously understood. Low level lead exposure has been clearly linked to loss of IQ in performance testing. Even an average IQ loss of 1-2 points in children has a meaningful impact for the nation as a whole, as it would result in an increase in children classified as mentally challenged, as well as a proportional decrease in the number of children considered "gifted."[14] ”

On 16 November 2007, the environmental group Friends of the Earth formally petitioned the EPA, asking them to regulate leaded avgas. The EPA responded with a notice of petition for rulemaking.[9]

The notice of petition stated:

“ Friends of the Earth has filed a petition with EPA, requesting that EPA find pursuant to section 231 of the Clean Air Act that lead emissions from general aviation aircraft cause or contribute to air pollution that may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare and that EPA propose emissions standards for lead from general aviation aircraft. Alternatively, Friends of the Earth requests that EPA commence a study and investigation of the health and environmental impacts of lead emissions from general aviation aircraft, if EPA believes that insufficient information exists to make such a finding. The petition submitted by Friends of the Earth explains their view that lead emissions from general aviation aircraft endanger the public health and welfare, creating a duty for the EPA to propose emission standards.[15] ”

The public comment period on this petition closed on 17 March 2008.[15]

Under a federal court order to set a new standard by 15 October 2008, the EPA cut the acceptable limits for atmospheric lead to 0.15 micrograms per cubic meter from the previous standard of 1.5 µg/m3. This was the first change to the standard since 1978 and represents an order of magnitude reduction over previous levels. The new standard requires the 16,000 remaining U.S. sources of lead, which includes lead smelting, airplane fuels, military installations, mining and metal smelting, iron and steel manufacturing, industrial boilers and process heaters, hazardous waste incineration and production of batteries, to reduce their emissions by October 2011.[13][14][16]

Has anyone who runs a mod sled with any form of leaded fuel noticed their children becoming stupider?

I think it's the school systems, not lead or air quality.

Air quality in Asian countries is one step below full on suck, and their kids are freakin geniuses.

Enviro-Nazis will stop at nothing to spin their agendas into uninformed panic, it's how they get stuff passed so easily.

air quality

I think Japan's air quality has reached critical on the suck-o-meter, get ready for super nuclear-power geniuses...

Are you really claiming that lead is NOT bad for you?

From what I heard, leaded av gas will be around for a while because it is simply too expensive and there are too many airplane motors that require leaded fuel. Too expensive to convert them over.

It's only bad for you if you eat, drink, inject or push it inside your bum.

Maybe just yours.

I mean to get lead poisoning from AV gas or leaded race fuel you'd pretty well have to soak yourself in it or sit there and huff it several hours a day wouldn't you?

I'm not denying that lead is bad but I can't for the life of me see how the use of slightly leaded fuels is causing children to suffer.

I grew up around planes and avgas my whole life, its all good. Have you seen my baseball?:face-icon-small-ton

No but I hate how they "spin" things to cause fear in people's minds. Trying to say that lead in the air is specifically linked to IQ loss in kids. How would they prove this, seriously? And how would they specifically link it to lead?

Kind of like them using data and specs from 1963 snow-machines when trying to lobby to have areas closed off because of noise and air quality.

They get me STIRRED up something fierce!! And the uninformed general public take it as gospel because they don't know any better, and vote on any and all laws based on their bogus facts.

It is not immediate contact with leaded fuel. It is the by products left over from burning, the lead goes into the air and into water.

Long term exposure to this in "developing" children causes learning problems, parts of them do not develop both mentally and physically.

Exposure to pregnant woman causes birth defects. These are facts, there are several thousand studies on this.

The claim you guys are making that leaded gas is not bad for anyone is almost as laughable as saying smoking is not bad for you because your 90 year old grandma has smoked her entire life.

I'm not saying that lead isn't dangerous, I'm opposed to the statements that say lead is specifically causing IQ loss in children. They would have to be living in a controlled bubble to not factor in other environmental conditions.

I've lived in Korea for 4 1/2 years now. I'm not joking in my first comment about pollution and air quality. Everyday looks like you are standing around a campfire. Some days when winds are coming in from China it's even worse. It's called "yellow sand" and it is BAD.

There isn't an EPA to regulate the same standards in the US, so air quality suffers. Any kind of fuel is used leaded or unleaded. Diesel vehicles pour black sooty exhaust without emissions restrictions.

But that being said, the children are VERY smart, I don't agree with passing the easy blame to kids in the US specifically from lead and air quality.

That's because, like China they kill and eat the dumb ones.

So I should stop forcing my kids to clean my sleds parts in buckets of race gas ? I mean it is so much cheaper then solvent, so I figure what the heck, run it in my parts washer.

Lead IS dangerous...........when you score a direct hit on your target!
Seriously, it is just another way for the Man to snuff out general aviation and firearms/ammo. SAD!!!!!!!!!

You should be arrested for child endangerment/abuse. The dangers of lead have been known for decades!

SWEET....someone needs to step up and phone social services on these dirtbags endangering kids....ha ha sorry guys that one makes me laugh.......or maybe rixster needs to get a reward for teaching work ethics,we should start a poll here ,so we all can decide on the appropriate action to be taken..and the rest of us can then follow the example given and live a better quality of life....
