good tires for a four wheeler??

D
My dad just bought a used 02 Yamaha Grizzly. The dealer put some new ITP Mud lites on it, and first ride up in the mountains I was riding it and put a hole in the sidewall of the front tire. I was riding her for all she was worth so i don't know if i am just hard on equipment or if the tires aren't real good for rocky trails. I rode it back and i'm probably going to take it to a tire shop to see if they can patch it or i might end up having to buy a new tire. I was thinking if have to buy a new tire, about maybe putting all new tires on it all the way around so this doesn't happen again. Thanks for your help! On a good note real impressed with the machine.

ITP arre pretty good tires. I just put swamp foxes on my 07 grizzly. The way I look at it they are 4-wheeler tires, they are going to get abused no matter what brand they are.

I have run ITP mud lites for 4 yrs on my 99 Kodiac and have had no probs with them in rocks, sticks, mud, etc. Maybe just a freak accident, don't know but I like them.

A lot of people like the mud lites, I think they are junk. Not heavy enough for loads or extreme riding. Watch these tires, as on the sidewall, where the lug ends, they come apart on the inside.
You want a good tire ? Go to the ITP 589 or look into the Powerking Mudcat.
I have a set of 29" Powerkings on my Foreman 450. Excellent tire

It doesn't matter what kind of tire you have, if you put something thru a sidewall, it's going to go thru the sidewall of anything. I just put some mud lites on my 450 kodiak. Like them so far.

I got Mud Bugs on my Grizz. They have been awsome! What type of riding will you be doing most. I agree with Gimpster, Mud Lites are junk, except for casual trails and the odd mud hole. I know lots of people that bought them and only one guy likes them.

In my experience, Kenda bearclaws are really effective, especially in the muskeg. I've got 2600km on my 03 Kodiak 450 and the tires on it still have plenty of life and they've seen everything, mud, snow, gravel, shale, logs, you name it. I think for the price, you can't go wrong. Are they the best tire out there? Probably not but for the price, they give a pretty good bang for the buck:).

I got Mudlites on mine and imo unless you are in the mud and snow ALOT, they are a pita in terms of ride quality and turning ease. I'm going to go with
the Terracross for my style of rocky/rutted trail. I see little mud.

Everyone likes to get the nasty huge lugged 589's or Mudlites then to ripping up gravel dirt roads and hardly ever get into any real mud (think Georgia, FL swamp gumbo mud)

Most peeps around here spend 90% of their time in loose rocky conditions (dirt road and logging roads) and 10% of their time in downfall timber

Why put up with running big arse lugs down the road?

I suggest something like this

they get you thru most any mud your gonna find around here (unless your hauling your bike to a swamp for the purpose of riding bottomless mud, or your in a mud competition)

They'll handle better on the dirt road than any lugged tire and they'll hold up to downfall timber sticks poking your tire

I would definatly go radial over bias ply too, stays rounder, don't balloon up on high speed and rolls smoother.

also tougher

It all depends what kind of riding that you do!

I like to trail ride until there is even so much as a puddle along it then I'm in there!

For me I went with Swamp Lites! I like them alot and there are people in my crew that took there warn mud lites off and put new swamp lites on. so far I have about 500 miles on them and so far so good!

I also have my stock rims and tires from my can-am renegade that I'm going to throw on e-bay soon if anyone would like, make me a offer!

most of the riding i do is in the mountains, so you see a little of everything. When i punctured the tire i was going through probably a 100 ft long snow drift and i hit a rock that put a hole through the sidewall. i got the tire patched and will probably keep the tires until they get wore out or i get another hole. but i'll probably go with something else next time. thanks for all the help
