Here is the last thing you wanted to hear.............Wait, ride what you have for the rest of the season. During Summer break work and save. You will find a good deal out there. Target a specific style of sled, Mountain, Trail, Snocross etc. Choose something current, in your budget and easy to work on.
Good Luck![]()
your right on one thing this is the last thing i wanted to here. this is a machine that my dad is willing to buy for me right now since my 340 is currently out of commision. all i asked was what to look for ex: cracks, if it runs good, ect, in no part did i say should i try to find something else![]()
I wouldn't worry about cracks or how the body looks, the thing is 18 years old. Ask the owner what he did for mainanence. How often was everything greased? How many times has the motor been rebuilt? Get an impression of how he treated this sled.
Then there is stuff you should check. What is the compression in each cylinder? How does the engine compartment look as far as cleanlyness? Is there alot of play in the steering system? How are the shocks? Basically check the overall mechanical condition of the entire sled - this is far more important then the looks on a sled of that age.
Its only 500 bucks, thats a set of skis or a seat for one of these newer sleds but I understand to you that is alot of money. You should be able to buy it and ride it the rest of the year, then sell it next fall for the same amount if you want to upgrade.
Hey tinker bell, you are bound to get responses that are outside the scope of your question, deal with it and move on. IF your dad is going to buy it, then go get it.... If you want a better machine, then wait till the off season and shop around...
Don't ask questions, if ya don't want opinions.![]()
well i was looking on my local crigslist and found a 91 arctic cat prowler 440 with about 4500 miles or so on it for $500. i told my dad and he said lets call him. is this a good reliable machine and is there anything i should look for before buying it. there was also a 92 arctic cat panter 440 w/ electric start, and reverse with about the same amount of miles on it for $600 both would be a good upgrade from my 340.
I have a son who wants things, sometimes they're not the best choice. That is what I am smelling here. I am not going to have a war of words with a 11 year old. Good luck
Hey Dic wad, he didn't ask for your opinion about the sled he asked what to look for when he goes to check it out. Why don't you keep your opinions to yourself.
As for your intitial question, Barnes did a good job summing it up.... A sled that is 17yrs old is going to look like it.... Appearance is not near as important ans the mechanical functions... Did he do proper maintance, ect....? I would suggest having ur dad, or someone with knowledge, inspect it and talk to the guy?
now you give the kid a tid bit of info that he was looking for. your sooooooooooooooooo cool. Can I be just like you when I grow up???
