good oppertunity ?

:D well i was looking on my local crigslist and found a 91 arctic cat prowler 440 with about 4500 miles or so on it for $500. i told my dad and he said lets call him. is this a good reliable machine and is there anything i should look for before buying it. there was also a 92 arctic cat panter 440 w/ electric start, and reverse with about the same amount of miles on it for $600 both would be a good upgrade from my 340.

Here is the last thing you wanted to hear.............Wait, ride what you have for the rest of the season. During Summer break work and save. You will find a good deal out there. Target a specific style of sled, Mountain, Trail, Snocross etc. Choose something current, in your budget and easy to work on.

Good Luck:)

Hey tinker bell, you are bound to get responses that are outside the scope of your question, deal with it and move on. IF your dad is going to buy it, then go get it.... If you want a better machine, then wait till the off season and shop around...

Don't ask questions, if ya don't want opinions.:confused:

I wouldn't worry about cracks or how the body looks, the thing is 18 years old. Ask the owner what he did for mainanence. How often was everything greased? How many times has the motor been rebuilt? Get an impression of how he treated this sled.

Then there is stuff you should check. What is the compression in each cylinder? How does the engine compartment look as far as cleanlyness? Is there alot of play in the steering system? How are the shocks? Basically check the overall mechanical condition of the entire sled - this is far more important then the looks on a sled of that age.

Its only 500 bucks, thats a set of skis or a seat for one of these newer sleds but I understand to you that is alot of money. You should be able to buy it and ride it the rest of the year, then sell it next fall for the same amount if you want to upgrade.

thank you this is the kind of answer i was hopeing for :D i'll take your advise into consideration. as for the other people who posted on here if i wanted something newer and more current it would probably be to much. if i worked over the summer i would miss football. if i had 2000 i would get some thing newer but i dont so i need the best next thing f[_]ckers:mad: i ask for more advise on the arctic cat forums.

Hey Dic wad, he didn't ask for your opinion about the sled he asked what to look for when he goes to check it out. Why don't you keep your opinions to yourself. :mad:

I have a son who wants things, sometimes they're not the best choice. That is what I am smelling here. I am not going to have a war of words with a 11 year old. Good luck

Any you have added so much content:confused: You freakin moron...

As for your intitial question, Barnes did a good job summing it up.... A sled that is 17yrs old is going to look like it.... Appearance is not near as important ans the mechanical functions... Did he do proper maintance, ect....? I would suggest having ur dad, or someone with knowledge, inspect it and talk to the guy?

K, first, all revdup was saying is that you could probably shop around a bit and find something a bit newer for not much more cash. My whole point was, as with anything on the internet, you are going to get a broad range of comments/suggestions.... Take what ya want and let the rest go out the door. Simple as that..... Hope it works out for you...

Personally, I would shop around, and try to find a late 90's model, but ya work with what ya have... THey key with any used purchase is to have someone with knowledge look it over and due a detailed inspection.

Second, AK is a POS:beer;

You know the prowler wasn't a bad sled in its days went pretty good, geez for $500 its a heck of a upgrade from your 340. Go look at it it might be in pretty good shape. See and hear how it runs. It may need wear bars hifax belt etc. but you can still get those maintance items through Dennis Kirk. It could be a summer project maybe fix it up a little. I have a 93 EXT Mnt cat 550 that has 5800 miles on it runs like a sewing machine! Its in awesome shape except for one crack in the hood my oldest boy put in it via a tree.
