good deal, or steer clear?

Looked at an 08 D7 155 today. Don't know much about these sleds so I need some help. The sled is in pretty good shape, just real dirty from sitting all summer. It has 5000 miles on the chasis and SUPPOSEDLY less than 1000 on new crate motor and track. Motor is totally stock. Unfortunately he has no paperwork on the motor because the prevoius owner had it done. It started after about 4 pulls - stone cold (he said it hadn't been run since last May), sounded ok to me. He's asking $3K for it. Is this a good possibility or should I stay away from it? The only mods are bar riser, lefty, and airbox - it's also geared down a bit.

Regardless of price that 800 will require a fix kit. Unless your prepared to replace the top end of the engine as soon as you buy it i would stay clear

He said d7. I have 5000 miles on my 08 700 has 120 psi a side for compression. Seen guys on hard core sledder with 6800- 7400 miles on their 700. Most were strong some had issues right out of the gate but they are very reliable.

$3000 is a good price I'm assuming that's in the states? That same sled in my province is on the Internet for around $6000.

Yes, sled is located in Colorado. I have no reason to doubt the guy when he says it has a newer motor - other than the fact that I don't believe anything without definite proof. I'm just thinking that if the motor is original and goes south, then I'm into the sled for over $5K with over 5000 miles on the chasis. I guess it's just the risk you take in buying used stuff. I haven't even asked him what his bottom line price is - he may go lower.

D7's are strong runners, the mileage wouldn't make me run. If you are worried about the engine, ask if you can take it to a dealer to look it over. The D7's HP is very close to a D8, so you can take them pretty much anywhere an 800 will go, plus you don't have to worry about skirt failure. You would never touch that sled up here for that price unless it was beat badly.

Ah sorry you are correct D7. I agree very low, a friend just payed 5700 for a 700 dragon 155 with slp pipe and a few other parts. Awesome to see another sask member, Im in saskatoon!

That's a pretty good deal - spend a little time going through it and it should be good to go. I am fixing up a high miled 07 d7 that I got cheap with a broken crank. One thing about going into it cheap is if you need to do a motor in the future then at least you know what you got for 5k (sled and new motor). Buy another used one with lower miles for 5k and you never know what you got - could be doing a motor for that one too and into it for 7k!

I would snag it for that. Even if the sled turns out to be a roach a person could always part it out to get your money back and even potentially make a few bucks on it.

Well, went back to take a closer look at the sled and found a list of small things that needed to be fixed - not really a big deal. Probably a couple hundred in parts. The main problems I found were the sled actually had 5800 miles on it, and compression was 100 mag and 80 pto. So, either the motor hasn't been done or someone went through rings in less than 1000 miles. He tried to tell me I was wrong and it actually had 105 psi in both sides (still to low for a new motor imo). I passed on the deal mainly because the guys stories weren't adding up. I wouldn't be surprised if the thing was stolen.

Glad to hear you moved on.

On a side note, I just picked up a '93 340 for parts. The odometer is just shy of 8700 miles and both cylinders were pushing 112# of compression. I imagine the motor was stock even.

I'm in Saskatoon as well, I'm going to sell mine for $5500 this spring. It's a great sled but I'm in need of more motor more track.

Jump on it before you regret it! Even if you have to change pistons they are cheap, I bought a Wiseco topend kit for $270...

That is what I am thinking... even if you have to put pistons in you are still ahead of the game. Now that you know the compression is low on the sled offer the seller $2,400 and see if he goes for it. Like others have said, it is better to know that the motor needs refreshing instead of picking up one for more money thinking the motor is all good but later ending up having motor isssues.

I offered him $2500, he basically said **** off! He told me he has a buddy that will give him 3 grand for it - I asked him why it was on Craigslist then.....no comment.

So... the guy says he'll take $2800, I guess his buddy wasn't interested. Did a vin check - the sled was a rental at a resort in Wyo. That explains the high mileage. I think I'm going to buy it and see if I can find out who did the motor (if it was really replaced). I can do a top end and take care of the compression problem, also I forgot to mention it has reverse. Not sure if that is good or bad.

By the way, maybe this should be a different thread, but I found a complete used Aerocharger Turbo Kit for the 08 D7 for sale here locally. Is this worth looking into?

PERK reverse has been stock for many years, it is not anything to worry about. It seems like you are trying to save money and get a good dependable sled, I'd stay away from a used turbo kit for now. $2,800 is cheap for a running sled, do a thorough once over and make sure you do all the required preventative maintenance (clean VES, clutches, check all mounting points, suspension, skid, ski spindles, etc).
