2006 GMC 2500HD, DURAMAX, short bed, Extended cab, AUTO TRANS, 4X4.

I need to replace the rear brake rotors.

Found out from my local NAPA store that there are two diff Rotors possible for that truck.

Any way to tell what it needs from the VIN or other source rather than pulling the brakes off the truck before the job?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Eric you need to measure a few things on the rotor...the center hole diameter..4.63" rotor size of 330mm x86.86mm vrs center hole 4.84" rotor size of 330.4 mm x90mm so most likely you will need to pop a tire off...measure the big center hole, the hat depth(distance from the lug nut flat back to the edge of the rotor surface where the pad rides, and finally the rotor diameter(that one isnt a biggy since either of the first should tell you...

Mike, thanx for that... got the measurement choices from NAPA... not wanting to pop the rotor off... both would need to be ordered and I will need to use the truck... not wanting to take apart and put back together... any way with the VIN etc to tell which one?

if u have stock rims just remover lugnut cover and measure the center piece of axle
also make sure to check dieselplace.com and follow some tips on grinding a small amount of calipers night and day difference for braking

cableguy... can you give me a link to that "grinding" thread?

Thanks in advance.

yes eric, normally the different gvw gets a slightly diff brake package, pad size swept area, depth of hat...

Copy that... but WHICH Specific GVW indicates the brake pilot hole size?

Thanks in advance.

Near as I can tell the floater shaft on the rear axle is the difference... Im betting that the older corporate 14 bolt axle (found on alot of GMC trucks) had the smaller 4.65" axle floater shaft OD & the AAM 11.5" axle runs the 4.75-4.80" (not sure which size, found both numbers on the net & its -20* so Im not going out to measure mine). So I would just pull the lug cover as mentioned above and mic the floater shaft... Or call the dealer with your VIN.
