GMC 4X4 Problem

I have an 04 GMC sierra half ton with the electronic push button transfer case. Today while driving to go riding I had it in auto 4X4 and tried putting it into 2 high...no luck. About 10 miles later the light indicating it was in Auto 4X4 went out and my message center said "service 4wd". My truck is now stuck in 2 wheel drive and none of the lights for either 2 high, 4 high or 4 low, or auto 4X4 are lit up.

Any ideas where to start?

I've done a ton of these, chances are it is your transfer case selector motor. Just did one last week and it was just the sensor inside of the motor, we replaced that and it worked great. Email BugIto and he can tell you exactly what we did to his. BugIto is his snowest account name.........

In 2004 the switch is not a common problem. With my migic crystal ball I would say that it is your T-case encoder motor position sensor. If you can turn a wrench half decent you could do it in about a hour laying on your back.
If you have any to check for codes in the t-case module and you fint a c0327 it needs the sensor.

Hope this helps

sorry off topic but i am having trouble with my 04 chev. the tow/haul button on the end off shifter does not work any more. last time it worked i had to push it a bunch of times to get it to work. hasn't worked since

I will bet you it's your 4WD selector switch. I've seen that on a ton of these trucks. It's about a $45 part from www.gmpartsdirect.com and it about a 10 minute replacement procedure. You're just putting a new switch assembly in the dash with this .... pop the old one out and put the new one in,.

I already pulled mine out...not sure what I expected to see. Any way to test the switch though? Or is a new one the test?

To answer Blu Du 's ?, most likely a broken wire. i have an 03 and mine quit also. it was replaced under warranty last month. told me it's a common prob.

just went through parts on my 01 dmax, broke the chain and the encoder motor fryed, to get the service light out you have to hook it up to a computer, gm wants 600 bucks for the motor, you can get from carquest for 240

I have an 06 half ton chevy and two winters ago the same thing happened to me. The dealer said that they fixed it with the computer and I was good. Well out we go again and guess what? The dealer finally changed the encoder and has been fine ever since. They told me that 03 - 06 had this problem. My father in law is a mech and he has seen a few come in after waranty. Hope that helps.

my 04 GMC 1/2 ton was also something in the transfer case. Warranty. Mine was doing the same thing though. Service 4wheel drive light was on and would not shift out of 2 wheel

Funny you said that, I was going to say the same thing. :D:beer;

I found a blown fuse under the hood that I forgot the name of already, but since replacing it the lights on the switch work again but I'm stuck in 4X4. In my mind this eliminates the front diff as a problem so I'm down to the selector motor or the switch...I'll replace the motor once the truck quits dripping and either it'll work or I'll buy a switch tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the help guys.

Before you spend the $ you might take a look at the ground. The encoder motor is grounded at the body mount bracket under the drivers door. You will see a couple of wires there with a bolt that screws into the bracket with a star washer. Make sure its tight and clean. They also had a problem with the connector at the transfer case control module getting water in it. This is mounted under the dash on the drivers side.
