The midnight twilight turned out to be too much for a couple of out-of-state visitors who wanted to be rescued after spending a single night in the Bush this month, Alaska State Troopers said Wednesday.

Troopers say they got a report of an emergency locator beacon registered to Washington, D.C., resident William Calomiris, 27, that was activated near Pungokepuk Lake, 20 miles northeast of Twin Hills, about 8:30 p.m. July 1. An air taxi service had dropped him and Adam Grunstra, also 27, of Bethesda, Md., off at the lake on June 30 for a seven-day stay, troopers said.

Troopers alerted the Alaska Air National Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard and then diverted their own Dillingham-based floatplane that was in the area to head to the scene and check things out.

The floatplane touched down about 10:30 p.m. to find there was no emergency. A day in the wilds had just taken its toll and the men were ready to leave, troopers said.

"Calomiris and Grunstra claimed that they had been sunburned," troopers wrote in a dispatch. "They were unprepared to deal with the long day length and any further exposure to the sun. They had activated the beacon in an effort to get extracted ahead of schedule."

Troopers passed a message to the air taxi service in Dillingham that the men were requesting an early departure and told them to wait at the pickup point, where they were recovered the next day, troopers said.

??? Is that the kid that was found dead in the abandoned bus outside Denali?? Or am I wrong??

no-you are right. that's him. ignorant for not taking a map that would have saved his life-yes. resourceful for living 112 days in the bush with nothing but 10 pounds of rice and a .22 rifle-definitely.

Lol

I visited Anchorage about 20 years ago in July! Nothing like coming out of the Bar at 3 AM hammered and the sun is still at high noon:beer; I remeber turning around and going back into the bar cause the sun hadn't gone down yet!

I knew I was in trouble when the folks who invited us for for a salmon feast had foil over all the bedroom windows:cool:

yup if you havent seen the movie 'into the wild' i strongly suggest you check it out, its based on the McCandless story

i remember getting tee-times at 10 pm the first summer i lived in anchorage. "Spenardi Gras" during the solstice is the best 72 hours of the year in that state.

check out the book. the latest edition has some more added information on what made him finally check out. jon krakauer is the author. pretty good read.

***snowizard-sorry for the hi-jack***

"from washington DC"

Those guys probably watched one too many episodes of survivorman. City folk have no business in the backcountry and need to leave it to those who have been there and know what to expect. At the least have a freakin guide!

chit is it just an extra chapter or something? Don't wanna buy a whole new book

The guy that died in the bus was a tool, he got what he deserved. To many idiots think they can hack the outdoors up here, when in reality, one unprepared night will kill you. In "into the wild"(not the movie, I refuse to see it, but real life) he made MANY very poor choices that led to his death. Stories like the one above happen far more often than you'd think. They need to screen people before letting them vist Alaska.

i keep bouncing back and forth on this one. what he did was obviously very risky and probably the worst thing a person could do to his family (leaving them wondering for two years about his whereabouts) but i still have to give the guy some credit for being able to pull it off as long as he did. i agree with you that there are way too many idiots that were encouraged by his behavior to try and "live off the land" and did some stupid stuff. i guess i'm kind of mad at the guy for dying in that bus when he could have crossed the river less than a mile away. i know what he did was something that i couldn't do (given the exact same situation) and for that, i give him my respect.

The ol Lady and I watched the movie. By the end she was snif sniffing and I was laughing.....got into a big row with me calling the kid a lazy deadbeat idot who lasted waaay longer than he should have, and her thinking he's some kind of hero...stupid effin movie.

LOL
I think he was a dick for leaving for so long and not telling his family...pretty good to survive like he did....but bad luck on the mold. Who could have seen that one coming?

got to agree

Frickin idiots.
I run a side line guiding biz and a couple years back took a Japanese couple on a snowmobile tour about 6-8 miles out of town, groomed trail over a couple hills and onto a lake. We stop on the lake to enjoy the sights and peace. The chick starts wiggin out on her fella,I ask him what is up and he says she is freaked out by the silence and wants to go back.

When you are out of your element you make dumb decisions. Happens all the time here in Yukon as well. Loads of Europeon tourists arrive with the idea of the last frontier. They read a book or magazine article and feel they are set. A couple of days later canoe is found down stream and the search is on.

Best one of all time was a buddy of mine fly's 4 germans into lake, drops them for a 7 day trip. My buddy starts to taxi out and is just about to take off and he turns around to see the four of them running around swatting, rubing their faces and bodies and then 2 of them jumping in the lake while the other 2 continue to run cirlces. He shuts it down and thinks wtf. He finally reaches them and they settle enough to figure out they used their bear spray like bug spray. These idiots sprayed themselves with the bear spary thinking it would deter bears from coming near them. TRUE FRICKIN STORY.

Should be a test before arriving. The North Yukon/Alaska are great places if you learn to respect it.
