Gearing Questions for ktm 300xc

We are installing a couple of mtn. horse kits on 09 3ooxc's and have found that timbersled wants a 12T countershaft. In my experience 12T with 520 chain is a bad idea. Too tight of radius and wears all components prematurely. Anyone doing anything different? I cant get a new chain on with the 13T but I think if I cut a prestretched dirt chain I could make it happen. Will it be too tall with a 13T? Will I need to change all my gears around to get the right ratio? I thought if I dropped the rear sprocket to a 16T, then I could regear in the chaincase to get the ratio I need. What is the ideal final drive ratio for high horsepower 300? Thanks in advance.

When I ran my 09 300xc I ran 14/20 - 17/17 and was pretty happy with that gearing. If you find that you would like to gear up a little buy a 16 tooth.

"Im running 13-17 20-20 .
You can use 13-17 with non o ring chain.
12-17 20-20 is great for deep snow..I run both"

Hey Relentless, Just wondering what your "Roll Out" is for the above if you've measured? also did you need the half link for 13-17 non o ring combo?
Thanks,

12-17-17-20,was 12 inch ..to low geared
12-17-20-17 was 16 1/2 ..to high..
12-17-20-20 was 14 ...making 3 rd gear just right in most powder days.
13-17 -20-20 was 15 ish roll out great for the more set up snow. Both of the last to gearing set up work great for me ..good power in the tight.and good trail speed.
13-17 with none o ring chain works without a half.I'd give the 12-17-20-20 a try my 12 tooth is showing no wear !! That works the best for me..at lest you get an idea??
,someone asked about roll out?? Its the distance The track travels For one full rotation Of the engine sprocket
I guess I should throw out that my MH is the 121 1.75 track.so if you got the 120 2 inch track rollout measurements Will be slightly off As the newer kits use different drivers..

I think I am going to try 13-17-17-20 and see how that works. I will be using in thicker PNW snowpack. How does the LT gearing work compared to a ST?

12-17-17-20 or even 13-17-17-20 is way way to low geared!!
Unless u like running though the gears a lot and going 25 mph

Run a 16/17 in the chain case. Gets you dialed for a 2nd gear boondocker and 6th is hawling the mail down the road.

That is super good but try a 13/17 then 16/17. One tooth below the 17/17 . Awesome I feel. 2nd is the money gear, 6th hauls the mail.

What would 13-16-17-20 do compared to 13-17-17-20. Wouldn't it be just a little taller? And allow me to fit my o-ring chain on a 13 countershaft sprocket?

Summitboy, why do you not like the o ring chain? I tried to fit a non o ring chain off of one of my mx bikes and it did not seem to fit either. I would sure think that an o ring would hold up better. Guess it should be easy to sell the oring chain to another mtn horse owner since the chains are all the same length.

Man what a frustrating night in the shop. Have one of the 300xc snowbikes I our group ready to go except for the damn chain. We cut a used non oring mx chain and it was about 3/8 of an inch longer than the oring supplied with the kit. Heated it to 250 degrees in the oven (old lady loved that one) and it still will not fit. If we could have gotten the master link in her, I would not want to ride with the chain that tight. Has anyone tried a 16t rear sprocket for a final gearing of 13-16-17-20. Are these sprockets standard industrial sprockets one could buy at an industrial bearing house? Any help appreciated. I know a 12T would do it but sounds like a 12t is tooo low.

I found a great roll out for the 300XC. I will measure and post. The gearing combo is; 12/17, 16/17. Use all MRD-6 chain. It is as loose as a slinkey. Set track sag to about 3". Amazing performance. 2nd tight stuff, 3rd is the high speed money gear.
