Hey is the stock front gear the one that should be on with a 16 short track kit. seems awfully low geared here any suggestions ,Thanks

Gearing

I believe that's what TS recamends but you could go up a tooth if the chain is long enough, I have a 500 Lt and don't use 1rst gear much, I'm about 265lbs ready to ride

What 500 ??????

What 500 ??????
If you search around I now an extensive thread on gearing around here. But that said I had a 2012 KTM 500exc and now have a 2015 Husky 501 FE basically same bikes and use this for both.

Ok I have purchased and installed an 18T and 19T for the chain case from 9Miler and for the KTM 500 exc this is a very large improvement over the stock gearing. First gear is actually some what usable and it is a little taller geared throughout. very easy to swap over with this setup, uses same chain length and tension-er also you do not have to remove any of the case mounting stand offs. just swap out the sprockets and tighten chain like normal.

i was told to run a 14 on the bike and 16 on the kit for best performance, could i just do 18 and 19 in the case instead? seems like less work then swapping my bike to 14 and other to 16
Thanks
Dustin

There are pros and cons of doing it both ways... a new countershaft sprocket for your bike runs about $15 and is easy to switch, but you'll probably spend about $90 on a new jackshaft sprocket and the install is pretty involved. Switching out both chaincase sprockets is fairly easy, but now you're looking at $90 x2.

The value in the 18T/19T is in the fact it is easier and gives you more options. Like I said there is a thread on all of this if you search, it also has a spreed sheet with a gearing chart thats how I came up with this option to begin with.

Searching this forum actually sucks so I posted in it and it is now on the top of the list. This is the actual heading ( Allen’s Tech Tips, “Calculating Gearing” )
