Gearing down=Higher or lower RPM?

I always thought my revs went up after a lower gearing change. Others are convinced RPM drop after the gear change. Do lower gears equate to lower clicker settings or am I halucinating?

Gearing DOWN as in deeper gearing, will increase RPM and lower top/ground speeds.

Simply, gearing down will allow for reaching peak RPM quicker, and easier..mostly under load.

Sounds like most the new Summits are geared too high, at least I don't really need 90-95 MPH out of my mtn sled....in most situations! :P
On a shorty, down rail road beds or lake running...well...I still prob dont need it, but it can be a rush! :D

I thought gearing lower would drop your RPM's when you are climbing cause your clutchs are shifting out more. I could be wrong though.

Grootsky is right. Gearing down as in going from 2:1 to 2.1:1 will result in a RPM drop. Many claim that since your clutches are now closer to a 1:1 shift ratio, the more efficient clutching will make up for a loss in RPM's. I've found it doesn't work that way. Everytime I have geared down, leaving all other variables alone, I will lose RPM's and backshift. Be prepared to run lighter in the primary and possibly more tension in the secondary to get your backshift. I've had to run a couple degree less helix in order to maintain a decent backshift after gearing down. The reason for this is your secondary is torque sensing and now feels less of a load from your track (lower gears) thus allowing it to upshift. It may upshift you right out of the powerband.

YUP, Gear down LOSE rpms.. Secondary senses LESS load and upshifts FASTER.

My setup is: 07 adreniline stock secondary(44 degree helix) 160-350 primary spring with2mm oversize rollers (5 gram heavier than stock) with RK Tek head. I run at clicker 4at 8300 +- RPM at 5000 ft elevation with 450 mains. I want to run at clicker 3 but i cant get revs at that setting. My pins are hollow with all weight removed, I've even ground 1.5 gram off of the ends of the pin to gain RPM.

Obviously I could run stock rollers but I,m stubborn. If I was content at clicker 4 could I gear down which will lower revs slightly. Will the faster/ higher upshift in the secondary gain more track speed than the higher gearing setup?

After you find a combination that yields proper RPM with the lower gears you may gain a little trackspeed because your clutches are now running in a slightly more efficient shift ratio. Trackspeed gains won't be much, possibly only one MPH or so. The biggest reason most people gear down is your belts/sheaves will run noticeably cooler when pulling big hills or big powder.

I geared down but I added ruffly 8hp and I'm still not hitting the right R's.
I guess I thought if I geared down I'd gain rpm's but I guess not.
You'd think with gearing down and adding 8 hp I'd be over reving...wouldn't you?

You can get aluminum pins, solid or hollow that are lighter than the hollow steel. You will need to run a higher spring rate secondary spring to get the OS rollers to back shift. This was a problem I ran into when I tried them.
