Gates has a short break in procedure for their belt but with a bit more info than Skidoo. They recommend two complete temperature cycles?

Just curious if anyone having problems with the factory belt has tried one of these and what the results were? Note that Gates recommends Acetone (like Noorona ) has in his video for the clutch faces but also states not to use brake kleen?

I had used a Gates C12 on my 2014 XM 163 and sold the machine with 700 miles on the belt and the belt looked very good with very minor dusting. I am not recommending this belt only putting it out there as an option for folks having problems with the factory belt. In Canada the belt is available through Napa.

I've run one on my 14' free ride and my 15' pro. They work well. Really like it on the pro. I have two now for the 850 but I'm running doo belt until it blows again. Popped two in the first 150 miles but have added weight and pulled all the crap out from under the hood. Got about 50 miles on this one. I pick up from the net for around $90.

i am definitely interested in getting 1 or 2 of these due to the fact of how expensive the factor belts are and issues with people blowing them on the 850. is the C12 49C4266 the correct belt for the 850?

i went onto the go big parts website and it lists lots of numbers. so just want to make sure.

Yes. Same as xm stock is doo 391.

I'm running the Gates carbon belt on my XM. Around 150 miles now with good results, but my sled has never been hard on Doo 391 belts. I can hold my hand to the primary sheave for 3-4 seconds after moderate(?) riding. Not 3 minute WOT pulls up a face or 5 ft BC pow, but tree & creek bashing on/off WOT in 2' fresh. The compound is a little softer than stock, so expect the RPM to come down a little with less slippage.

Another option may be the Doo 288 belt (RS belt). Not cheaper than the 391 but may last longer. Slightly narrower and softer but otherwise same specs. Adjust belt deflection to account for width. It's supposed to handle higher temperatures than the stock 391 belt. https://www.ibackshift.com/article/belt-143.asp#heat_durability

Edit: now up to 500 miles, no cords pulled. Working well. Unless it blows catastrophically I'll run these from now on.

Re-edit a week later: this belt failed at 550 miles. It was the day after riding pretty hard at lower elevation than my usual, with likely too fast of a trail ride at the end. Going to try a Doo 288 belt next.

Bought one last year for XM and never used, just put it on 850 since my stock/original belt is getting sketchy at only 65 miles. I'll try and keep you updated but its going to be a mon or tue for my next ride. I read on FB that a guy uses them rather than Doo and loves them. Post where you found the best price because even if it's not the better performing belt it's still a cheaper belt to get you out of the back country.

Edit: After reading the gates info it sounds like you pick one or the other, to many variables.....Well ****!

This past Sat I had the chance to run the gates carbon belt for the day. I am super impressed with this belt I obviously set belt deflection and this sled pulled 8000 rpms from 6000 to 9000 feet and I really felt like it put more power to the ground then the stock belt.

I never blew the stock belt but it was only pulling 7600-7800 on the ride before and the sled has 385 miles.

The engine brake worked really well with this belt and I felt like the stock belt never had any engine braking.

I haven't seen any feedback on this belt so I thought I would share what my sled did with it

Pulled a cord on my doo belt at 385 miles, so broke in a gates and rode that. Blew it after about 100 miles or a bit more. Ran great no problems with the belt, theres a issue with this sled. It chunked off the whole front side of the belt, no damage on the back. The belt doesnt have cords that come out and wrap around the crank tho so thats a plus. Heard the chunks breaking off and was able to turn off and stop. I'll keep using them till I figure out this sled since they're cheaper, but I'm thinking alignment or motor torque is my issue with the way the belt tore apart.

For What it's worth, a lot of guys on Doo Talk in the MXZ SECTION are running this belt, and saying great things about it...

...I realize that we are talking apples and oranges between the MXZ and Summit, but they are holding those things wide open for eternity, running the same engine and clutch, with higher gearing.

...just food for thought!

I got four days out of the my gates carbon belt compared to the avg 1-2 days from the Doo belt. I will continue to run the Gates belts at half the price and double the miles

How are the clutches holding up , I had issues with some aftermarket belts eating the engagement section of the sheafs out to the point where I needed a new clutch after a season. I have No experience with this belt if it does not generate extra clutch wear it would be a great alternative.
