Gasoline Programer

Anyone have any expierence with a programer on a gas engine? I am thinking of putting one on my 1/2 ton Silverado.

i had one, bully dog, on my chev 8.1 gasser and to be honest theres not much improvement. you dont feel a real seat in the pants gain like in the diesel trucks. when it comes to gassers your best bet is to have a custom tune done by someone with something like EFI live or there is a few mail order tune companies on the internet like blackbear performance and westers that can get you a custom tuned computer for around the same price as a programmer that is tuned specificaly to your needs.

Had a superchips in a 5.4L ford with the same result other then the shifts were a bit firmer. Nothing like the Banks in my diesel which is just a mild tune compared to what a lot are running. I'd save the tuners for the diesels unless you plan to do other work to the gas and tune to match that.

Edge evo in my 07 chevy. Didnt feel like a big jump in HP on "extreme" although the Shifts are a lot firmer than stock which is a plus. There are tons of settings you can monitor with the evo, but for the higher HP programs it is recommended to run 91+ octane. It will also calibrate speedo for different tire sizes and/or gear ratio.

i got the edge evo in my 07 f150 5.4 i never noticed much until i ran extreme with premium fuel. The extreme program will not work until you put in premium or better fuel. I played with all the settings and ran premium and i was happy with the gain really helped give some kick on the bottom end.

i would like to spend a day at the track cause i think with some fine tuning i think i might be able to to get the truck to run low 15's in the 1/4

Dont waste your time or money with a plug in tuner for a gasser. I have a 1/2 ton silverado SS and I went with a custom tune from a guy.

www.gowheatley.com

he will tune your PCM to whatever specs you want him to, just have to tell him if youve done any modifications or not. His tune woke my truck up alot. he adjusted shift points and timing and it just runs solid.

after you pay for the first tune, i believe any other tunes that you want are free, but i could be wrong, he may have changed that. Talk to him for sure.

I've been running a Hypertech programer on my 01 Silverado 5.3 for eight years without any issues. I know there have been many advances and new products since 01, but Hypertech makes a quality product as far as I'm concerned.

I am just looking to be able to pull a trailer better. I am not concerned with the fuel milage as much. I use premium fuel anyway, my company did some testing and penny's per mile it is cheaper to spend the extra for premium fuel. I run my truck hard "75 to 80" on the interstate. I would just like to have the truck be able to hold at least in 3rd gear without shifting in and out when I pull a trailer.

You can mess with your shift pressures a little but like said above there is little gain on a gasser. I ran the Superchips Flashpaq and Bullydog E3 in my 99 Chevy Silverado and there was no differance or real improvements with either except I was able to recalibrate my speedo to my tire size which was the only improvement being it was a lifted truck. Most tuners, you don't want to be hauling anything heavy with.

Anyone else with programmer experience. I have an 05 F150 5.4L and I am getting a 3 place steel enclosed trailer. I am thinking about getting a programmer, but after reading the posts, I am starting to doubt whether it's worth the $300+ for one.

Thanks

I've had two Hypertech programmers ...

Honestly, unless you do some head work and cam work they don't make that much difference unless you're bracket racing and want to change your shift points ...

The reason I bought one for my pickup was to program it for the correct tire size. I can't stand not having a working speedometer.

I played with the 'performance' settings and wound up just going back to leaving that part of it stock .... it wasn't that big of deal.

I use a SCT X3 with custom programs for my 08 F250 5.4L

HP with the premium tune is noticable, but the biggest difference is the driveability. It makes the electronic gas pedal more responsive, and the shift points on the 5spd auto are a vast improvment. When towinng my horse trailer at 7000lbs, the premium tune will allow my 14,500gcw rig to pull over almost any hill at highway speeds.

The HP on the regular tune is noticable, but just. The improved driveability is more then worth it though.

Both tunes saw a 1mpg improvment in mileage.

Also, for a chev, you can get a towing program that will give you better holdback.

It will also allow me to check codes, if I ever get one; remove the speed limiter; change tire size.

YOu could look around for a used one, I got mine for 200 shipped ( used )

I had a Superchip cortex for my 07 1/2 ton it helped out alot with the shifting during towing and the ability to change the speedo was very nice and i did notice a little better fuel milage while in economy mode. After adding the chip and getting ride-rites under the back to get it to trailer well I still ended up selling it for a 3/4 diesel. No comparison. And way better mileage.
