2011 M8, The float for the gas gauge just sinks in a full tank of gas. Hooked it with some wire to see if it was stuck and it moves freely. Anyone seen this before? Is it possible to change out gauge assembly or would I have to change the gas tank?

I have an 11 and it does the same. Moves freely like it functions when it's removed, put it back in and I always have 3/4 of a tank. I had an 07 and 08 and they did not do this over 4 years.

how to check M series gas level

Step 1: Remove cap

Step 2: Peer into massive gaping hole... look at gas level

the gauge is just held in there by the rubber grommet around it. Get a small screw driver and pry up on it, and it will pop right out...

My 14 year old, jumbled brain, son says to me "how will you know how much gas you have?" I say, open the cap and look in, duh. He says oh yeah, right. :)

Still wish the gauge worked to aid in my OCD with things that don't function properly though.

cheap replacements on ebay. open cap, grab gauge shafts, twist and push up. install new by pushing down on guage cap, making sure the ocd in us gets it straight, and the gasket is in place. ski

the fuel gauge is definitely a weak link on the M's

I've only seen about 1/2 of them work right

Easy fix when it comes apart
Buy jb weld At auto store,
Put it on parts, rod, push back in holes, give it a night,
Push back into hole going into tank .... Fixed

Don't mess with eBay ... Fixed both my m6 and m8 tanks that way, a couple of years back
