garage vertical storage

M
Has anyone built or bought a rack system to store your sled in the summer? I am finishing my garage and am looking to build or buy a rack system to "stack" my toys for season changes.
I was thinking of building a rack of wood with a moveable ramp, I don't have or plan to buy a forklift.

Looking for pictures, ideas, websites and such for ideas or plans.
Let me know what you have seen or built!!

Didn't know where else to post. This seemed like the best match, kinda like a sled deck but different.

I can't find the manufacturer of the storage lift I used to have (and wish I didn't sell). But if you put this in the address bar you'll see a small pic of it: http://www.google.com/search?q=snow...=simg:CAQSEgmp88W6aqL1OyHe-bF8WhM9oQ&dur=1025

It would hold 3 sleds at a time - I bought it used for $300 and never should have sold it as I could really use it now with the new garage.

Maybe someone else out there recognizes the lift and could say who built it. I used to have the website saved but it was on my old harddrive and was lost a while back.

When I had 3 sleds I was pondering the same thing, but now I'm down to 1 so no need.

I saw a video on here somewhere where a guy had built a 2x4 framed shelf and had a ramp to drive the sleds up onto it. The outside edge of the shelf were supported by rods which were anchored to the ceiling. The inside edge was a 2x4 anchored to the wall studs. Looked very good, but you probably need a little more garage length to accomplish this with the ramp and all.

Another idea I had was to build, essentially, one long ramp. One end of it is hinged and affixed with sturdy connections to the ceiling. The other end can be disconnected and lowered to floor. Would need to use like a couple heavy duty pulleys and rope. Actually, it may be possible to use winch or pulleys on both ends, then raise the whole thing at once, though balance (side-side) may be a concern.

On the outside edges of ramp use bedliner plastic for the skis. In the middle you can screw a bunch of 15" x 1x2 boards onto it for traction.

On edit - you must make sure your ceiling can support the load.

I've posted pics before, but here's a few of mine:

Of course I only have one sled after building it. LOL

very nice!
I just have a residential type garage, 2X4 framing with rafters 24"OC. New style light weight construction rafters will not support the weight of a snowmobile.

I am thinking 4x4 posts with 2x6 beams

Pallet racking

I have used pallet racking and it works great, Depending on how tall your garage is you can stack up to 3 sleds high. Pallet racking is 42 inches wide or 48 inches wide depending on model. And you can get them any whhere from 8 foot tall to 20 foot. I use 13'6 tall ones and attach cross beams at the top then 9' and 5'. I use the top to beams to attach a chain hoist at front and back, I use it to raise the sled up to the 9 foot mark then put a couple pallets under the front and back of sled then do the same for the 5 foot and finally use a roller and push the third under neath. Its up at my shop I will see if I can get some pictures. Plus pallet racking is easy to take down and move, supports over 2200 per level, and is cheap. 2 end racks and 6 cross beams will run you about 350 dollars.

That's what I'm doing now

I'm in the process of getting the pallet racks as we speak, strong, dirt cheap prices, adjustable and easily movable.

Uprights were $ 38.00 each, and the horizontal beams were only $ 12.00 each.

They make the uprights even up to 64" in depth if that appeals to you.

Uprights come in various heights from 8' to 20'

Will post pics when done in the next month or 2

Looked into pallet racks, perfect!
Local availability has them from 6' tall and up
only thing I would have to modify for my setup is changing the bracing on 1 end for loading
AND CHEAP!!! can't hardly build something for the price
