Garage Space

Ok since this is about the only active place on here, I once again come before the masterful knowledge that is Utah (yea I just threw up a little typing that)

I have a major garage crisis pending at my house.

Let me spell it out for you all. I have a 2 car attached garage....right around 600 square feet. Workbench along the house wall, heater and then a little beer fridge. Along the outside wall I have one cabinet nice and high with shelves and an old dressed underneath. Then on the outside corner I have a shelf that I store the mower under.

One minivan and one car. Along the other wall I have garden tools and shovels hanging, more shelves and then by beer opener with cap catching box under and my garbage can for emtpy cans.

Of course having kids, I also have 1 barbie jeep, a bike (plus mine but no issues it hangs up) a trike, jogging stroller and double stroller, scooter, skateboard, a tote of chalk, etc. I am cramped for space right now due to all the kids things that need to be accesable all the time for the wife and kids.

I am very shortly going to be adding a motorcylce into the mix so I need to find room now.

Anyone have ideas on how to arrange and store the kids stuff? Right now it just takes up floor space along the walls but I need that space for the new bike? I've been thinking and can't really come up with anything good. Anyone ever used the shelves you hang from the ceiling? Or have good ideas for storing kids bikes, etc? Building a shed isn't ideal right now as we are thinking of moving in the near future.

PM Utahsnow and tell him to take a pic of his garage. He put shelves all around the perimeter for storage; they are simple to put up. Hang what you can above the cars.

And just an FYI, never admit to owning a Minivan!! LOL

will do if he doesn't chime in.

I never said I owned a van, jus that one lives in my garage.

I have a 2.5 car garage and only one car fits in it, too many man toys and tools for the other one.

Yea, I gave up and just belt a detached shop.

You could build a little 8x12 tough shed sort of thing on skids... I did that years ago and it was simple to move when we moved to a new house. I just jacked it up in the air, backed the sled trailer under it, and took it to the new house.

store high! There is tons of space that isn't getting used on your walls and up high. You can easily build some shelving that will allow you to put your bike underneath them will still providing a lot of storage space. Being able to cram things up out of the way goes a long way to increasing the open floor space.

Detached 4 times the size of what you think you need is the only way to go. Built my house 5 years ago and thought my 1300 SQFT garage would be ohh soo much more than I needed. Wife was calling it the "garagemahal". Now she is filled to the brim in a very unorganized manner. I have started attaching stuff to the ceiling now. Those bike hangers that pull up on the pully system work nice but I only put my kids up in the winter its too hard for a 7 yr old to pull it down....

I think those racks on the pully system seem cool I have even looked for them once or twice and I can't seem to find them locally. You could build something similar and just use a ladder.

My old house I could fit my 21' Boat, wifes car, cr 500, 99 rmk 136, and 99 xc 141 all in a smaller 2 place garage. Wife had to be carefull when she pulled in or she would get a peg through her bumper!!

So don't worry you are in the same perdickament the rest of us are in....Except I don't have a mini van:)

big space killers are the barbie jeep and wagon. All ready started thinking on ideas to get crap like the spreader and kids misc toys up and out. As long as the wife can get them down it will be all right.

X you jump up on your soap box and tell the world that the U crew is just a front for the gay **** company you & Big Jake (screen name) started & Ill help ya out, hell if your close to some good walleye fishing I might come out & lend a hand:face-icon-small-sho

At my old house, I used hooks, ropes, and pulleys to hang bikes, ladders and other big items. I also built hanging racks to store stuff above the garage door. When that stopped working I moved and built a 36X48 garage and when that got tight, I built a 2nd deck.

did you just hang that rack over the door from the ceiling by a couple feet? Use 2x4 or metal brackets?

shh you weren't supposed to know that! Of course my personal lake isn't very good for Eyes anymore....but Mille Lacs is only an hour away from the cabin.

I also have the same problem. Two car garage, two vehicles, toys and three kids. I only park my truck in the garage and the car stays outside. More room for the toys. Thats just my solution.:face-icon-small-ton

I agree with CC. Ive even heard the Minivan called the vangina!!

I hate when I can't find a parking spot for my Barbie jeep! :( ;) Let alone you got a family truckster! haha! My dads the king of the pack-rats, he's got a set up close to what ski-breeze has for the sleds, and rafters above for most everything else! Fit both jeep and truck in there. :)

Holy crap! if thats the kind of garage your working with I got nothing for ya. Damn tilted writing>? I did a big 4X 16 shelf for a guy by running 2X4s down from the trusses and hanging 2X4 laterally on the hangers. Then put a osb deck on it. So it a big shelf that hangs instead os kicked of the ground?

Yup, the rack just cleared the garage door when up. I just used metal straps going from the rafter down to 2X4's for the cross members.
