G4 BELT EATER! [2017 Ski Doo 850 Rev G4 clutching/belt fix?] Belt Issues

Beware you can only add one small washer before the bolt head hits the web of the spider. I also had bushings that were perfect, it is not the bushings that are the problem it is the bolt head.
I can only add one washer just under one gram, I doubt that that makes enough difference to even try it.

I did order the sea level primary spring as a mild fix, that has less force that should reduce the rpm by about 100 ( best guess/hope ) to get me down to around 8000 rpm for the time being until there is a proper fix available

The difference in the springs is 100lbs of final force..will be more than 100rpm..probably around 300rpms?

With the Pdrive you can change shims also to adjust engagement and final force.

Ordering good win performance pivot weights, I'm hitting 8100 on clicker 2 that's on trail normally, think the 35mm be good or just get 38?

Im in Washington and I run the 38 mm kit at 19.5 grams on clicker 3 with the black doo secondary spring it works out to 8000 rpm in the wind blown yesterday at 6700 feet ish so it should drop to 7900-7800 in deep snow which is perfect.

Its a new design clutch... and it looks pretty promising as well... We'll see over the rest of the season... and BRP plus the owner of the pDrive equipped sleds will benefit from the 10's of thousands of hours and miles put on these sleds and the aftermarket development that is sure to follow this season.

I know that is no consolation for those that are having major issues. Baffling for many... from the owners to the dealers to the factory.

Radically new releases like this one with new engine, chassis, track etc etc.... first years can be a big learning curve for all involved.

A sincere good luck to you all... the sleds look to be amazing performers.

I'm hearing that there will be a release of specially taper-cut Polaris P-85 Primarys made for the 850 eTec... and will be a full 3 lbs lighter than the pDrive... with floating secondary kits and clutching that is designed to work.

While I believe that the pDrive is a great innovation... it seems it will take some time to get it dialed in.... and I'm sure this one would too... the weight savings could be a big plus though.

Gotta love the aftermarket in supporting our sleds...

No other info at this time... strictly at the 'rumor stage'.

I put mine on clicker 2 with skidoos low elevation and pullin 7800 to mostly 7900 very rarely hitting 8000 now. Got rid of even more plastic under the hood and today made very little belt dust, what I'd consider normal. It was very cold out but the nose cone was plugged with snow all day not letting any air in. I'm at about 1500ft or so. I'm not sure if it really is better and what helped the most. Hopefully that takes care of it. Sled really is impressive once in some real good snow.

We have 3 850's in our group. We've been in deep powder every ride and we've been flogging our 850s mercilessly since the beginning of Dec. We all have between 300-500mi, and we lost our first belt of our group today. Not surprised given the pounding we've been giving our belts. We are not disappointed at all in our clutching/belt life.

That's the strange thing... some have had no issues... and some have had to buy over $1000 in replacement belts... not a consistent problem.

The same situation was true on early XP's if I remember correctly???

250 miles on my late season 165x3 x with no issues. removed foam and felt and trimmed bottom of guard off. belt looks good with minimal dust. adjusted chain after each ride and adjusted belt also.

I hope, for the sake of the Ski Doo customers that plopped down their hard earned cash on what seems to be a strong running mountain performer, that this issue is taken care of.

I've had a belt eating sled in my history... and it was a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach as I unloaded for the days ride... "Did I pack enough extra belts? Will a belt blow in a 'sticky situation' and cause damage to my sled, a crash or injure me??"

These are the important factors IMO.

Agree with Mountainhorse, hopefully we will have a fix or the plastic/foam removal will help with the heat and the belts last like belts on the 800 etec.

So... How are the belts holding up this week Graham?

Others with belt issues.. have you done anything on your own that has made this belt issue less of a problem?

I have made a few changes to the clutches and gears. Nothing super ground breaking. I have not blown any belts this week. The snow here on the coast has firmed up so I am not convinced my changes are the solution

Why

Why haven't I bought shares of Bombardier? With as many belts as I've seen blown and the use of 1/2 gallon of oil on a hard 60 mile ride there stock price and profit have got to be on the rise lol!
Love the sled but seriously. I've tried different setups on clutching but nothing conclusive? Ive geared up and increased spring pressure on both springs but after breaking trail or WOT climbing for extended periods of time the clutches are still way to hot. I haven't blown any belts lately so that's good. Motor mounts move way to much and may be the cause. U can put sled on track stand and wrap it out and watch motor move? Out of our 3 my motor seems to move excessively. Could be because of the loose fitting on the bottom of my oil tank dripping oil all over motor mount? 2 of our sleds have developed the leak and will b fixing before next ride. Buddies went on a ride and 4 of the 5 sleds blew a belt in under 30 miles with over the hood powder. Problem hasn't gone away just everyone is tired of talking about it and waiting for dealers to come up with a solution

Had my 850 165 3" out for the first time have clutch cover gutted with holes drilled in the top and the front of the clutch cover with shock tower vent and top side panel vent to get air moving thru. Rode 3 days in revy 5 to 7k ft with stock 5 to 7 pins clicker 3 had to drop to clicker 2 was around 8000 rpm all day riding in deep a little lighter snow checked clutches after some long hard pulls could touch with hand sled performed well no bogs very responsive. Belt looks like brand new 150 miles. From there went to the Tetons riding around 9500 ft kept stock 5 to7 pins in and adjusted to clicker 4 was running 78 to 7900 in 3 to4 ft of fresh heavy snow 8000 down trail lot of long pulls clutches got a little warmer but nothing out of the norm for the snow conditions 350 total miles no issues beside oil tank leaking at the seam. Also adjusted belt deflection after first day. I do believe these sleds are no weighted heavy enough among other things. Hope this helps some people.

Just had mine in some heavy costal snow a good 3 feet at 2 degrees celsius . Nose cone pretty much pugged and ripped it hard for a few minute to get the belt as hot as possible.

To my surprise the clutches were surprisingly cool . No steam and any snow would melt but not boil of , after about 2 minutes I could move the clutches without gloves to adjust the clickers. About 4.5 grams extra weight on the stock 38 mm pin and all foam removed.

I did however get the engine hot enough on a few pulls that the ECU started to pull power and the rpm would drop down to 7400 --7600 (only if I started the pull with 4 bars on the TEMP) it would pull here down after about 30 seconds of wide open. I Found the same issue with the DEMO sled last year. Now this was seriously heavy spring type snow where you could really make her work, I did however hope that they would have it fixed for production sleds.
If I let here cool down to 3 bars I could do the same pull and hold max RPM all the way.
