I got an email from at Edgeworks tool letting me know about a replacement bumper for the new PRO-RMK's they have made that is made from more heavy-duty materials.

I believe that Carl's Cycle is the retailer for these bumpers.

From EdgeWorks
Edgeworks heavy duty rear bumper
For 2011 Polaris snowmobiles

As you know the Carbon Fiber bumper on the 2011 Polaris is a very nice extremely light part.

I have spent hours of design and testing time, considering ounces vs. strength on this Heavy Duty bumper. Designed by Don Bentley with years of performance snowmobiling component design.

Now its time for some real world test. For a few of you who have the money and might give a stuck sled a good hard tug with a tow strap.

The stock bumpers will work fine for lifting, But for those who want to be able hook up a tow bungee or strap and use a sled to pull out another sled that is stuck, This bumper is much stronger.

  • Cross bar is 1/8” wall 6061 aircraft aluminum tubing (compared to the .060 carbon fiber on the stock bumper)
  • Side plates are much thicker 6061 CNC. machined billet Aluminum
  • Replacing the riveted assembly with S.S. bolts, make this a much stronger bumper

The down side: this rear bumper is 11 oz. heaver than the stock bumper.

The result is a bumper you can hook a tow strap to and pull another Sled, even when stuck in deep snow. Connect a snow bungee or a tow strap anywhere to this bumper and pull out a stuck sled with confidence.

Better protection for the tunnel in the event of a rear end collision!

The center bar is Military spec. black anodizing for a durable, scratch resistant finish, and a similar look to the new 2011 stock bumper.

Installation time 10 to 15 minutes remove and replace 4 bolts, Install two bumper bar bolts with blue lock-tight.

Smoother shinier finish can be quickly polished. Use slots in side rails design to hook and hold Tow bungee(t.b).strap. No sharp edges to cut your( t.b.) provides a place to carry, and reducing the time required to hook up (t.b.) to a stuck sled. Leave one hook in left or right side slot of bumper side plate or strap to lift bar and pull with confidence.

The price is $120.00 This bumper matches the 2011 bolt locations. It can be installed on the 2010 or any sled with a 15 3/4 " wide tunnel, by drilling a couple holes.

We can also make this bumper in any width for other snowmobiles.... $140.00 and a couple weeks lead time.

Thank you for your interest.

Don Bentley

Are people geting the stock cf ones covered under warrentie?

They should have used a piece of .062 aluminum underneath for added strength. We have had a few CF samples and under any side load they just failed. You can hear the cracking sound of the fiber composite giving way. Under tension great! Compression was a little less than calculated. But these were just sample 7/8" tubes about the same thickness with swaged aluminum ends bonded to the rod. In compression they failed at the bond.

These Edgeworks bumpers look like they are quality but the only problem I see is they have one of the same inherent flaws as the stock bumper and that is the milled out side supports. Out of three bumper breaks I have seen on the Pro so far, none of them have been the actual carbon tube breaking, but the side supports snap when you put stress on them. I know it wouldn't look as cool or be "as light" (which is a joke, it's only a couple ounces at best), but someone should really consider not using this milled out design as it doesn't have much over the stocker.

Edge works bumper for pro

Grizzly sports in Caldwell Id. has them in stock. Call and ask for john

I wouldn't think so... you break..you bought it-- LOL.

I asked him that same question when i bought my sled. The salesman said that carbonfiber is one of the toughest meterials on earth and it wont break.... He also told me that 2010 rmk tanks are diferent than the 2011 and that the sled wont run if i take the ignition out. :pound:

SDiddy: Thanks for your comment. I agree with you that if the slots in the side plates were taken out that they would be stronger. If you would like i can make you set like that if you want and see how your idea sell. Weight and looks are always a big issue when it comes to sleds. These side plates are thicker and much stronger than stock. The slots also give you a place to hook a large snow bungee hooks. If anyone wants to wrap their bungee around the bumper. If anyone breaks this bumper i would like to know about it as soon as possible. Then i will redesign the area of the fracture point. Thanks again for your input.

It's really refreshing to see a fabricator that doesn't jump down your throat at the first sign of constructive criticism. I appreciate you seeing my view point as well, and I think your design is a good thought so people can get a hook around their bumper for any number of reasons (snow bungee, etc.) I hope for the best of luck with bumper sales and I will surely be keeping an eye on your bumper as an option in the future.

make them too strong and you'll be replacing a tunnel rather than the bumper.

What would you guys think about using an aluminum bolts in the rear bolt location? This would allow the rear bolts to sheer before any damage to bumper or tunnel. then carry to extra bolts for a quick fix in the field. I would have to do some test to determine the best bolt diameter.

I managed to snap the bumper off my assault 144, think I caught it on the trailer though when I dumped it off

Have to be careful if the bolts shear the cooler sticks out a touch further then the tunnel side plates so if the bumper rolls up it will tear the cooler up and mark your tunnel up. This is what my stock one did when the side plates broke.

The manufacture can correct me if I'm wrong but the stock side pieces are cast aluminum of some sort. These are obviously a milled product and should inherintly be much stronger. As for using the bumper to tow a sled....I would think you're asking for trouble and the best bet would be to route a strap through bumper and hook to the tube on the running boards.

Use bumper jack to lift track off floor for testing tuning and adjusting track.

Wyopro, I have to agree the stock tunnel on the Polaris could be damaged, hooking directly to the bumper for towing. I'm hoping there will be some good tunnel reinforcements side plates available to Make towing possible from the bumper. For now There seem to be lots of bumpers breaking, and a need for a stronger one. Thank you for your feed back.
