Funny Noise

My sled has developed a clank on the chaincase side of the motor, only when moving but while i'm ridding I can hear it. It is hard to investigate this when the sled has to be moving, also it has a can on it and it is just way too loud, anyone want to trade a loud can for one more quiet??:D:D:D any thoughts on the noise would be great, new to sledding, also it does not seem to be acting any different then it did before (no noticable power loss or handling difference)

Have you checked the tension of the chain? Also I read on here somewhere of somebodys brake rotor coming loose on this model/year of sled. Couple of things to check.

I havent check the chain tension, I will though, Is the tensioner on the outside of the case or do you have to pull the cover, If you do have to pull the cover will I have to replace a gasket or is it an o-ring type? ANy help would be wonderful, First year ridding, First sled. Also I did grab the rotor and there is a little play in it but I don't think it is enough to rattle how much play are these supposed to have and how do you tighten them?

I would think that a little play in the rotor would be okay. The tensioner is on the outside of the chain case. It is a bolt with a hitch pin holding it from turning. Pull the pin and turn it clockwise by hand until tight then back it off to where you can get the pin back in. Only tighten it by hand though.

I have an 02 800, and I here a cha ching type of noise while riding down the trail also. My buddy and I looked at it and come to the conclution it was the brake rotor, His rev is tight, but mine will move front to back, side to side no movement.Anyone now if this is normal??

while riding apply brake a bit if rattle stops it is your brake rotor moving side to side=no problems.

Otherwise tighten chain by pulling out pin out of botl on top of chain case, finger tighten and re install pin to closest hole.

If none of this stop the noise check drive shat and/or remove chaincase cover and check it out.

I had a noise last year that was weird, it was a clank, click sort of thing, and sounded like a stick in the track as it went around. Turned out to be the front guides on teh rails. They had wore to the point the track cleats were banging on teh bolts holding the guide. It was just the front end that had the wear, the hyfax was fine, other than the very front. a pair of 4 dollar parts and some new bolts,,, no more noise.

I think it had to do with a change in suspention from Doo, I notice on the 07 they increased the angle of attack ont he front of the rail in respect to the track, and it now contacts the hyfax rather than banging on the guide.

Just something to look at.

Ok guys gret ideas, just got back to work, so I can deal with important things(snowest forums) I did tighten my chain up only got half a turn on the bolt (needs more holes drilled in it there is only one hole straight through) I took it for a little ride it didn't fix the clank I seemed to notice it more when I was going slow and turning around I don't know if it has to do with it or my machine is just quieter going slower, any other Ideas would be help Can you tighten up the brake rotor any mine has a little play but I don't see how to tighten it.

i would strongly reccomend checking your chaincase dipstick for chunks of chain. if your chain looses a plate, you can hear it at lower throttle settings. also, it would be a terrific idea to pull the cover and examine the chain throuroughly for defects. you may find an issue.

also jack the rear of the sled up into the air and with the engine shut off, roll the track around by hand. mabye you will hear something, mabye you wont, no guarantees. try to get the track to move back and forth quickly and look for issues, and listen for defects....

you can try to run the engine with the track in the air and listen for the clunk there.

also rotate the clutches, primary and secondary and listen for the clunk in there...

does the noise come or go? is it more of a steady throttle noise? does it increase in frequency the faster it goes? what about goosing it, then letting off the throttle, can you hear it as your slowing down??

just throwing ideas out.

let us know if you find anything.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm about 90% sure after ridding Sunday, No holds barred (and the buises to prove it) waist deep powder and nothing broke. I think it is the brake rotor!! my problem is it seems to be getting looser is there anyway to tighten it up (bleed the brakes, replace shoes,) what keeps it secure to the shaft? someone must of had theirs down that far!
Thank you for all the suggestions they really helped this beginner.
