Fuel controllers? What good are they?

My buddy has a fuel controller for my 700 I just picked up. What do they do and is it worth it to add it. No boost/NO noss.
 
They allow you to add and subtract fuel throughout the throttle positions/RPM ranges. I didn't find that it was necessary for my 07D7, but I did add a PC5 this season to get rid of the lean mid-range spot that has bothered me for years. The engine does run smoother now (richer in the middle and leaner on top).

Think of it as DIFFERENT JETS for EFI Sleds.

Think of it this way

5% change is like going from a 500 MAIN JET to a 475 MAIN JET.

On my 2007 D7 I added fuel in the 5000 R.P.M. range at part throttle opening

And reduced fuel on top end.

And as MORSNO pointed out, make sure your ground wire is still attached properly
 
They do allow you to adjust fuel supply if you have a problem that you want to deal with.

I had the same sled but did not run the fuel controller even though I had a new one in the box to use.

The CFi system is self compensating for altitude air temp and other factors... unlike a carbed system with an electro/mechanical altitude comp.

I used my D7 extensively through the west from California Sierras, to Utah, Colorado, Wyo, Revy, Whistler and many points in between... I did not have any run-ablility issues with my sled other than a clogged fuel filter (I knew better than to let it go so long)
 
I took ran two identical sleds one with factory tuning and one that could be modified. Pulled numerous hill climbs and was able to pull and extra crisp throttle out of the one and added 100 rpms to its max.

Factory always errors on safe side for the most part and a little effort can pull that extra power.
