Fuel controller FI KTM

Dobeck Gen4. Easy to install. Easy to tune. Easy to use. The only problem can be the gauge that gets moisture in it. I store my bike inside after every ride and never had the problem some other people have had.

Dobeck did go to a heated gauge but I haven't had to use it yet.

Hay niskibum I have a do beck sitting under the bench if you interested. Ran it on ktm last year and went 300 smart carb this year. Can be switched by do beck to work on any bike I believe. 150 bucks with dongle. I am over here in chattaroy.

The tuner is going to do things the Dobeck can't. Mostly things like timing. If the Yamaha tuner is anything like the KTM you can advance and retard engine timing where the Dobeck only deals with fueling. You would still want the Dobeck since conditions change every day and it is a live system.

For example the KX couplers switch out pre-defined timings and fuel maps. You could put in the white chip which advances timing and pulls a % of fuel away across the board (like 3% or something) but on a cold day you are still over fueling by a lot. The Dobeck pulls a lot more fuel away but you also get the advantages of the advanced timing from the white coupler.

My .02 worth. I have played with about everything out there the last few years and in looking back at them all I have a personal favorite. It is a competitive market and all tuner/programmer companies continue to try and "out do" the other guy. We have seen a long list of issues with some and trouble free with others. Ideally, we want a stock bike, no programmer, no wires, no shorting out, "gremlin" failures, starting issues, stalling issues, frozen gauges or shorted out boards. Just a stock OEM bike that has an AFR for our elevation and temperature. Just like our stock bike in the summer. Then we wouldn't need a programmer at all. That is the simplicity and "no muss/no fuss" and zero issue advantage I found in the Bazzaz Z-AFM mapper. You ride in your area a few times and the unit records your air/fuel results. Next you request the target AFR of 13.8 and select "apply changes". The ECM will change your entire fuel map to run 13.8 in your recorded conditions. Remove your AFR sensor and you have a "stock bike" with a winter fuel map. Just like your OEM map, it is a fixed map for winter. A fixed map will cover all of your winter riding just like your original stock map did for summer riding. 4000 to 5000 foot average coverage. Then to top it off, you have a two way switch that you can select. "summer map", and "winter map". Twelve months, dirt bike, snow bike, two maps at the flip of a switch. There are no wires, no gauges, no AFR sensors, just your stock bike now with two maps. Summer and winter. We have had zero failures, shorts, issues going this route. Simple and 100% trouble free.

Is the AFR gauge necessary for tuning? or is it, really only there, to double check that the closed loop fuel system is doing its job?

I like the idea of a live fuel system that is constantly making adjustments to your environment, but don't like the idea of cluttering up handlebar space with a gauge.

Also, does anyone know how the dobeck couples with advanced timing tunes? I imagine that it only enhances the performance of a map switch

I'm running a 2013 KTM 500 XC-W with full FMF exhaust

The gauge is where the code is held so yes, it is necessary. You can shoot new updated code to the gauge wirelessly if needed but you'll need an IR card and software to do it (you should never need to since it's only for development).

And if you have a coupler that has timing adjustments they will stand as they are. The Gen4 only manages fueling... nothing else.
