front shocks/alignment tool

:D i am sure this has been beaten to death but i would like to know your thoughts on front shocks need new ones and i would like to know what the best way to get some good ones. i dont know what is good, should i try to get used or should i buy new. i was not looking forward to buying new because they are way over priced. i am not an extreme rider but not a trail rider either.
Also i want to buy a clutch alignment tool and the dealer doesnt have a clue which one is idiot proof.

I broke one of my stock RydeFX's and went with the Fox Zero Pro's. I love them. I had the 110# spring put in instead of the 100# to help compensate for me removing the sway bar (I highly recommend sway bar removal too)

For shocks, they are on the lower end of the price range... about $550 / pair

dont you need an alignment tool to set your clutch to add or remove shims on your secondary:confused:

No, float the secondary if you are worried about it, it will self-align.

alignment

this is what I did went to the dealer got the clutch alignment tool for the 2005 RMK 900 and when I checked it, it was 110 thou out it says that it is to be 40 thou out. I pulled the motor until it was just about out, then placed two washers on top of the motor mount rubber on the clutch side, put it back together then it was only 65 thou out. thinking i will try this out
does anyone forsee a problem with this, I know it will be a little hard on the back motor mount, but what else is there to do with no actual alignment and 4 blown belt last year.

Unless you have a broken motor mount, or some other other specific problem causing mis-alignment, a properly floated secondary should be all it needs.
Are the clutches well maintained? Are you still running the stock helix? Stock air box? Any venting?
Dan

it is all stock havent put too many miles on it and just ran it last year i havent touched it until now. why would it be so far out of wack with the alignment tool, i understand that the secondary will float and the engine mounts look good.

You should consider some clutching work, the stock helix's are JUNK. I went through many belts before I changed my clutching. Haven't changed a belt since.
The motor mounts can't be checked properly until the engine is out, by the way.

vinni.... what year is the sled.

If it is a 2005.... It probably has broken front motor mounts.... You cant tell with it in the sled...

This pic shows a 2005 900 front motor mount. The mount was "laid over" in a vise to show the torn rubber.
This mount looked normal at first inspection!!

^^ditto...

its worth pulling your motor to check the front mounts..otherwise you will be blowing more belts and you can say bye-bye to your crank...

thanks I will have to pull it once again, had the motor 95% out to put the washers in. just gave them a glance and they looked fine, i will double check, not like we have enough snow here anyways. It is a 2005 all stock, waht helix do i go with, i think it is just better to order the 06 mounts then take the engine out for the last time ( I hope). the 06 mounts are just as good as the compfusion motor mount other than $$$ or is this a wrong statment :(

You need a 66-44 helix, I got mine from Carl's Cycle web site.

I'd go with the Compfusion mounts and be done with it. My 06 900 motor mounts were all cracking (2000 miles on them) on the inside where the engine mount bolts go. I just went with the stockers again because I was in my rebuild to deep I ran outta money at the time. That is with the SLP torque arm and push arm.

I bought mine with 660 miles on it and it had just gotten the 06 update on the mounts, pulled the motor this fall with 900 miles and the mounts were broke again and the rear mounts were cracked as well. Ordered the Compfusion kit and new rear mounts.

Make sure you check your Oil cable and Intake boots while your there.

Vinni, before you go out and buy that helix, give us some more information on your sled, riding area, etc. That one and the 64 work very well for longtrack sleds and mountain riding, but would be worthless on a short track in the flatlands.

Hey Hundo,
I am going to reply for Vinni as we both have the same machines (other than color) and do a lot of our riding together + I am interested in what would work for my machine also.
We have 2005 900 RMKs all stock with 151 tracks with approx 1200 miles on them. I live in Western SK and he lives in Eastern AB or in other words we are flatlanders(2200ft elevation). Vince has grenaded one belt and the remainder have had the cords pull out of the sides. I only change belts when I think the belts are getting old or worn(mine has 41 thou kick where Vinces'is almost triple that). Both machines have had vents added to the side panels this fall and the #225 lb spring installed. Regular maint. has been done (exhaust valves, boots, new FBF cables) except nothing done to either clutch on either machine. Max rpm usually in the 8200 rpm range currently. Secondary float is within spec on both machines.
Now for the clutch modifications questions
1)What will work better for us out here
2)If we head to the hills (e.g. Valemont elevations 2500-9000 ft) what changes should we make before we go there
3)Any special tools we need to purchase before we tear into the clutches (I have a primary clutch puller).
4)Any lubes needed? Been a while since I tore apart a clutch

Thanks from both of us for your input.
