I have been very fortunate on the rider crap shoot. Some of my best rides last year were guys that I met off of the forums.

yes, no beacon, no ride
How are you going to find me if you don't have a beacon? If you can afford a sled, and the gas, you can surf craigslist or the swap meet here for a used $100 beacon.
honestly, we just ride with our own group.
We don't usually hook up with other riders in the parking lot because it is such a cr@p shoot as to what you get.
We always organize the ride before we get to the lot.
I don't mind taking people who are learning if they're up front about it. The trip I hated was taking 2 guys who showed up in 100k rig with mod mountain sleds, talking like they're one of us and then turned out to be psycho drunks who couldn't even ride.
I've never had the problem with people in the parking lot, but the line "my buddy from work wants to go?" is when the trouble starts. Has anyone had trouble with "hey my wife wants to go?" and what do you say to him? I had a day long ride planned and a buddies wife wanted to go and she got cold and we went back home after 10 minutes of riding. What do you say when she wants to go???
Probably half of the time we go riding we end up hooking up with other riders and we've had some great rides. Having said that, last year we met some guys in the parking lot that were new to the area that wanted to tag along. We agreed to show them how to get in to Mt Jeff and by the time we realized these guys were idiots we felt like we couldn't ditch them because they might not make it out. Long story involving the word "cluster", we got them out after riding their sleds across sidehills, changing belts, watching them polish off a bottle of whiskey and talk talk talk like they were seasoned mountain riders. Anybody got any sage advise about summing up your fellow riders given 10 minutes in the parking lot?
I knew I was in trouble when the guy dropped his pants and took a big ole chit right by my trailer...He called me the next trip out and asked bout riding again. I have been avoiding his call for 4 years now.
I would lend you a beacon for the day...but thats just me...

you should have scooped it up and snuck it into his muff pot while he wasn't looking.

I always look for the local BC dude with a 14 foot sled hanging 3 foot out the back of a DAKOTA P/U (with the red flag of course) sporting retro purple and neon green gear
chances are they'll know the mountain VERY well!
Had some older gents in the above catagory take me some places that puckered me up lol
