Free wheeling primary clutch

Ok, got a strange one here..........this is a 2012 800. While riding, it all of a sudden over rev with no movement. No weird noises at all.
Engine runs fine, but the primary is not spinning. While idling, clutch just sort of slowly spins, and could stop it by holding with my boot. Can spin the clutch by hand and feels smooth but it's not moving the pistons. The clutch bolt is tight, and shaking the clutch around, it feels solid on the crank.
Is it even possible for the crank to separate in this manner?
Any of you expert engine guys have an opinion?

My money is if you pulled that clutch off it would fall into two pieces.......

I hope you're right., that would be nice. The clutch bolt was too tight to loosen with our limited tools, but I could hold the bolt head while the engine was spinning.

Think the crank is done, if you can hold the clutch with it running. Probly snapped off inside the outer bearing. Pull the clutch, that will tell.:face-icon-small-con Let us know what you find!

Your crank is gone, quit running it. PTO end is broke.

I have a bunch of 600r/800CFI cranks if you need one.

Had that happen to me with an 04 800 edge.the crank shaft broke off just inside the clutch. You need a new crankshaft. Send it to Indy Dan sorry for the bad news.

Just a little update. Crank is broke on the inside of the outer bearing.

The sad part is that, this is a brand new crate replacement engine from Polaris, installed at the dealer. Now has a few hundred miles on the clock. The good part is it's all covered by warranty. Sure doesn't give a guy a warm fuzzy feeling.
This is not my machine, so don't know all the details on the replacement specs. When you order a crate engine for a 2012 sled, is the engine built to 2012 specs or would it be built to 2015 specs? As the engines evolved over the last couple years, do they all get updated to the latest version?

When my -09 Assault completely grenaded the engine Polaris replaced it with a -09 engine even though the -10 engine, which was improved in several ways, sat on the shelf next to the -09s. They said if I wanted the -10 I would have to pay for it even though the sled still was covered by warranty.

My bet is if you order a -12 engine you get a -12.

He got a 12 crate motor unless he spec'ed it differently. Too many electrical, mechanical differences year over year to float motors, unless you spec and pay for it.

Could be corrosion from sitting in the crate in a high moisture location for years that led to the failure.

Been awhile since I worked at a dealership, but the crate engines don't come with electronics do they? If not it really wouldn't be anymore work to install a 13+ as you would be using all the injectors, etc, off the 12. Now the chance of getting Polaris to do this would probably be slim to none, as it would be a warranty mess if any future issues arise.

The couple 12 engines I have bought (blown up) the original owners had replaced them with 13+ models. Only real difference is the cylinder castings. Injector ports, etc, are all the same.

The wiring harness subtle changes will be the most noticeable. The changes to the stator connectors in '13 and the flying lead TPS upgrade in '14 will cause you a little more expense. You can upgrade the stator connectors to fit the newer harnesses, but to upgrade the harness to the newer requires more wire length and I'd rather not splice it personally.

Yeah I know the connectors are different. But do new crate engines come with any electronics (stator, injectors, etc)? I don't think they do, so would anything stop a guy from just mounting all the 2012 electronics to the 2013+ short block.

Again we are probably past the point that the dealer probably wouldn't do it. But if a guy had to buy a used shortblock, I "think" I would go with a 2013+.

I remember discussing the stator connector and injector connectors a bit with you (Loudhandle) when I was trying to find a stator for my extra engine. :beer;

You are likely correct about the short block. My bad. Worth a mental note for future reference, just the same.
