Was perusing an Air Force Arctic Survival Manual and found this quote very amusing:

The world's coldest spots are not within the Arctic Circle. There probably is no spot on any seacoast within the Arctic Zone that can show a minimum a slow as the -90 deg.F. temperatures recorded at Riverside, Wyoming. The lowest temperature recorded at Pt. Barrow, Alaska, is -56 deg.

I had almost forgot about how damned cold it gets in Riverside till I read that...

Here is what I found:

Cold

Lowest temperatures ever recorded

On Earth −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) Vostok Station, Antarctica 1983

North America −66 °C (−87 °F) North Ice, Greenland 1954-01-09[1]
Canada −63 °C (−81 °F) Snag, Yukon Territory, Canada 1947-02-03[2][1]
United States −62 °C (−80 °F) Prospect Creek, Alaska 1971-01-23[42]
Contiguous United States −56.5 °C (−70 °F) Rogers Pass, Montana 1954-01-20[43]

Other cold records

Fastest temperature drop: 26 °C (47 °F) in just 15 minutes; Rapid City, South Dakota,

If memory serves, I think Cold Foot, AK, on the Dalton Hwy, North of Fairbanks is proud of the fact of the largest swing in temp. over some short period of time. From something below zero to some outrageous warm temp.

I have a pic of their sign board showing the data, but it's on 35mm slides at the moment.:o

Speaking of that Air Force Survival manual (AFM 64-5 or AFP 64-15)

The info and diagrams on fire building and snow shelters are excellent

I worked on the Oil Rigs in WY and lived there for a bit and I got to tell you drilling for LPG in the winter is an exp. you will not forget.

One of the reasons I moved to AK is the weather. The winters here are way better. Plus, on top of the cold in WY you can always add 15-60mph winds. Everyday!

Growing up as a kid in Mn the coldest I remember was a day that 3 relatives all had -56 and one had -61! Acutally the -61 was on the cheesehead side of the river so that was actually in Wisconsin. Stupid kids, we still burned multiple tanks on gas out of our sleds that day. They sure ran crisp! I like the temps here a whole lot better. That and the fact I am now smart enough to not ride in those temps. :D

guess it goes too show the internet lies.
You win the reading comprehension test..... Found it in an old Air Force training manual, not on the net.

But, here is a more recent copy of the Airfoce Manual 64-4 dated 1985 that doesn't contain the above quoted passage.

I did a search for the average winter temps for Wyoming. I had no idea it got that cold there
Pretty interesting, eh? People don't know the definition of "Wind Chill" till they've spent a winter working in Rawlins, WY.

Can you post the diagrams of the Air Force fire starting process?
That chapter starts on page 117 of the Airfoce Manual 64-4.
