Found out why they call it the Sinks

Referring of course to the Sinks area up Logan Canyon.

I went up riding today, just to poke around.

I noticed quite a few sleds and alot of ropes strung around.
I made my way up, it seems two fellas dropped into a 50 foot "sink" hole in
the ground, luckily neither one of them were hurt, the Yammy and the Poo 900
didn't fair as well, but did fair a lot better than I would have expected.

Well a Chainsaw winch, a couple snowmobiles hooked up to ropes and
pulleys and they did it, pulled both out.

Just as an FYI this wasn't far at all from the Highway, just west of the area
where all the kids tube and sled. Keep your eyes out guys, I can only imagine
how bad this could have been if the riders had fallen into the hole as well.
The hole is marked with some yellow poles from the parking area(I think thats where they came from)

I didn't have my camera, but they did, so hopefully they'll visit here,
and can add to the story.

50 feet is one of the smaller ones...

Holy chit. I aint never seen a hole that big. Why would you ride there with so many "safe" areas?

oh yeah, you gotta keep your eyes open up there. for the most part in the most trafficed areas i cant think of to many real deep ones but ive heard of some over 100ft deep, but luckily i havent seen them. i was told theres one somewhere just to the north of the state sheds up there thats supposed to be pretty deep.

Kevco, did you see that one?
If I go up this weekend, I'll take some snaps of it.
I've seen some of these but usually they are big and obvious
and lots of time have alot of snow in them. This was just like a gaping hole.
inside down on the floor was almost like a cave with a overhang(I wasn't down there)
the guys had to buy climbing gear to rappel down to the sleds.

No? Where is this place? Im not being sarcastic here why ride it? Is it a trail head to some good stuff or what?

the sinks are at the top of logan canyon, past beaver mountain

There are some massive sink holes up tony grove... i found one in the middle of some trees that i hope to never see again. I almost jumped my sled right into it. It was only about 6'x12' opening but i couldnt see the bottom

The problem is it looked like a sweet rock to jump off from the top, but luckily i checked out the landing before hitting it, cause i would have dropped right into it. If i ever find it again i am taking my duct tape and roping off all the trees around it.

I found another one at the top of a chute i was climbing last spring. It was only 50 feet deep but it was sheer walls and like 150' across... makes me nervous up there sometimes...

I've heard of guys hitting those sink holes at full speed. I think that would put a damper on group morale.

one problem is alot of times the snow blows over the top of them so theres little to no sign that theyre there until its to late. but there is some decent riding up there.

If it's that dangerous why doesn't the state build some fences aroudn all these holes? Mean you have to pay Reg fees and what not. So why the hell cant they use that money to make it safer for all the riders out there? We have enough danger as it is!

I wouldn't think a forest full of fences would go over well
with the greenies, heck even putting a sign up wouldn't be good
cause you'd have to put one at every possible angle.

we tried to get permission a couple years ago to mark some of the holes and the FS said no, if we mark one we would need to mark all of them, someones lawyer would have a hayday if you fall into one thats not marked.
they never seam to have a problem marking the skiing areas
