Forward Throttle and Handguard install

I posted this on the ArcticCat forum. Thought I would share it here:

BCIL has suggested a forward throttle works great so I decided to try it. I have had one ride on it so far and I am sold. Easy free mod.

For safety I installed Cycra Probend hand guards.

How to easily rotate your throttle block forward:
I shot a quick video to show how stupid easy it is to rotate it.

Installing the Cycra Handguards:

The Cycra Probend CRM (Center Reach Mounts) are the strongest but require some serious bending to fit the stock Proclimb bars.

Here is what is needed:
Cycra ProBend CRM handguard kit 7/8" bars : link ($134)
Cycra alloy spacers : link ($13)
washers to clear brake reservoir
torch and vice to bend frames

Step 1:
Remove grips and drill out end caps
Remove the screw securing the end of the grips. Warm up the grips with a heat gun and twist the grips off. The plastic end caps have a rivet which must be drilled out. (See pic)

Step 2:
Cut the mountain bar molding and slide brake mount as far in as possible for better clearance and install mounts

Step 3:
Install guard frame on center mounts with spacers and get an idea how much you have to bend/twist the ends to line up with the handlebar ends. I best way is to heat up the guard frames with a torch between 1" and 2" from the end. Then place in a vice and bend twist. Go slow and do a bit at a time. Check them to the bars and rinse repeat till they line up.

Step 4:
Tighten everything up and enjoy. Lots of room for Throttle Forward. Thanks again BCIL for the suggestion.

On the older sleds, the bar ends were already threaded with the same thread as the cycra bolt, I take it that's no longer the case?

Sounds like it's a little more of a pain doing this on a PC than an M, but still doable!

The tread on the factory bar end is a Torx T25 screw thread. The Cycra is a standard-bolt-style threading, but I never thought of trying it. It would hold much better. I guess using the factory Torx screw instead of the Cycra hardware would work.

This is the Cycra bar end hardware:

I was thinking that I had used the cycra bolt in the stock insert, but maybe I used the stock bolt in the cycra return... either way, just saves a couple steps. I've never pulled the grips or drilled the insert out, so I must have done one of the two!

I did it on my quad. Its super dangerous if your not use to it. Lets just say i catwalked 50 feet on my back bumper and bailed and sent my quad wide open into my neighbours shed. But our sea doo has a finger throttle and its the cats ***

I did protaper bars on my M. I believe they were the carmicheal bend. No mtn bar stlye ends so it was quite a bit easier than your set up. I did the same cycra handguards. My only concern with running a front throttle is on a ride I actually hit a tree hard enough to bend the mount and actually break my middle finger. I don't know if I would run the front throttle without a tether.

On a side note I suggest an MX style bar to anyone willing to try it. Narrower bars with a nice sweep make it much easier to mountain ride IMO. It allows you to keep both hands on the bars much more often.

Nice write up btw. :focus:

Definitely agree on the bars... the cat bars are crap (same with doo) How did you break a finger? Trying to picture what happened there?

I think a tether is a good idea if you ride any sled, but not different with a handguard on the front. Riding without a handguard I think is a little sketchy, but I've done it for a couple seasons & know a few other guys who have done it for years without issues.

Came up on a moment where I was sidehilling on my left side and coming up on two trees that were way too narrow to fit between. I knew it was gonna take a hard pull to the left plus heavy throttle to basically panel the sled on its side for a moment, fit between the trees and then right the sled and continue. Easy right? LOL. Not so much. I actually managed to panel the sled through without any problems but when I went to right the sled I let off too much and instead of the track digging in and allowing me to sidehill again it just kinda stuck and shot me down the hill. First thing my sled found was a tree. It hit me right on the handguard with my hand still firmly on the grips. Bent the guard back so violently that it pinched my finger between the bar and the guard and broke my middle finger all in one action. Basically that handguard took the full brunt of the force and stopped the whole sled dead from about 20mph. I had a chromoly post on my m. I'm sure if it was the factory post it just would have snapped the post and just been a little swollen. ]

Sorry for the novel. Trips down memory lane get the words flowing.

Holy crap... that's nuts.

Gotta wonder though... without the handguard, had you taken the hit to your hand... how would that have gone? Those friggin things are STRONG... I can't imagine bending one in like that, that's a HARD HIT!!!!

Agreed.... I won't ride without some sort of hand protection. Growing up riding enduro and mx I think you're crazy to ride tight trees without them.
