Forged Piston Vs Cast Piston

I've spoke with 2 different companies with two very different ideas on which pistons are surperior. One said the cast piston is the better option because the high silica content can withstand heat better, while the other prefers a forged piston due to overall strength. Which do you prefer or do you plan on running in your axys and why?

I usually pefer cast because that is what the OEM's are. Mine are still OEM.

cast, the skirts collapse faster on the forged piston. when you have a engine that will brake the cylinder when the skirts collapse it is a no brainer

It's much more than cast Vs. Forged.

Diff alloys... designs... quality and purpose.

Some forgings, like 4032 are fairly high silica content.

All depends on EXACLY what you are comparing.

.

Expansion rates are different between the two... forged are more apt to coldseeze... been told to let forge run for a minute before pin in it ever time you shut it off. Read some engine builders think the new OEM piston is the better option. It can be confusing.

Interesting you say this, when talking with RKTEK about their "drop in" forged piston kit they say the exact opposite.

Again... It ALL depends on WHAT the metalurgy is of the piston....

Silica content... in both CAST and Forged. (Hypoeutectic vs. Hypereutectic)

ALL cast and ALL Forged pistons can't be lumped into one general category.

The term Cast piston has zero indication that the skirts will hold up better.

For the record... In general.. I'm a fan of High Quality CAst pistons...

But...

High quality Forged pistons with appropriate metallurgy and design are making their way to be available recently to us sledders.
These forged pistons may just be the ticket to durability, and longevity.

Go with billet.

Seriously though, I couldn't care less. All I know is that the forged Wiseco pistons I put in my Pro 800 run waaay smoother than stock. And the power increased a bit, due to better tolerances and less wasted energy from vibration.

My conclusion: Buy pistons from a manufacture that cares about tolerances and ignore how it was made.
